its datedness shows how different things are now! willow instant messages this crush for weeks without a picture or knowing a real name! now, most online dating is visual-based and you get to see way more of someone's identity (thru a google search, instagram, fb etc!)
i'm wildly entertained by the representation of the evils of online dating in btvs, and how vastly that version of "writing the internet" has changed in just 20 years or so! #315slides
in the episode i'm thinking of (from 1997), willow is internet dating a literal demon that lives in the internet!! the whole deal is that the demon used to be trapped in a book, but because said book was scanned, he could wreak havoc across the internet
this speaks to the affordance of "spreadability" and is a commentary on the hesitance people had about the internet in the 90s, when it started to become more accessible to the public. it reads more as a warning than anything else, even when cloaked in silly supernatural metaphor
yet found my ideal balance. i feel as though i'm always-on out of obligation to others and how much i feel like i "should" be living a more public, accessible life. i think my answer will change once i figure out how to engage more authentically and of my own accord !!
i agree with boyd that it's all about finding a balance between a public life online and a virtual one! i think that balance is vastly different between people; i have pals who are social media stars and ones who post once a year on instagram to placate their friends #315slides
right now i would answer that for me personally, the pressures of being always-on outweigh the benefits of online participation. this feeling is def exacerbated by pandemic circumstances, and living far away from friends in the US. but i would argue this is because i haven't...
so this rant is my personal apology to unanswered emails, texts and unfinished work!! i'm happy to have summer weather to pull me out of my apartment and hopefully bring some aspects of my life offline again
i really resonated with the idea of "context shifts" in boyd's article! school, friends and work are all primarily online, meaning i have tons of internet channels that all seem to be calling to me at once (slack, email, text, mycourses, social media)
this has led me to the unfortunate habit of being inconsistently available!! most of the time i'll be constantly online, but then once it becomes overwhelming i'm suddenly completely unavailable for a day or more because i can't even deal with looking at my phone😓
i went a bit overboard and added a lot of information!! i also got in contact with a childhood friend of mine to get a picture of her old house (her dad was the caretaker and so lived in a historical home on the property!) < 3
i edited the wiki page for the quaker meetinghouse in my town! i was surprised to find there barely a paragraph of information, despite the fact that a lot of the defining moments in philadelphia quaker history happened there. #ccom315#315wikichallenge
@adorable_spice this is GREAT !! additional hack: make a checklist of the #315slides so u can see them all in one place and check off what you've completed
the pro of wikipedia is definitely being able to bypass academic gatekeeping in favor of more crowd-source knowledge. beyond that, it's a great resource that pools bits of information from all over the internet that you would normally have to spend ages looking for #315slides
