What other goalscorers lack is Ronaldo’s ruthlessness and inevitability. There’s no game state he can’t score in. It’s all about mindset, and he has the craziest of it.

Ronaldo doesn’t process a difficult game as a reason to doubt himself. He processes it as a situation he has to conquer. When the game is slipping away, his mentality doesn’t change from maybe we can score to hopefully we survive. It becomes I’m going to find a way. That is the difference.

Most players respond to circumstances. Ronaldo tries to impose himself on them. If he misses, he wants the next chance. If he loses, he wants the next game. If the team is struggling, he doesn’t mentally remove himself from the responsibility of changing the outcome.

And that mentality compounds over years. You start to see why he could repeatedly put himself in situations where failure was not mentally accepted as the final outcome.

There is an almost irrational level of self belief to it. That’s what I mean by ruthlessness.

It isn’t simply wanting to score more goals than everyone else. It is having such an extreme conviction in your own ability that the circumstances around you don’t get to dictate what you believe is possible.

Ronaldo’s mentality has always been the game is still alive, therefore I can still change it.

And that is why he is inevitable.

i agree there are gaps in midfield, too much gap between the cbs when defending (especially defending from either sides of the pitch)

could it be down to:
a)no elite defensive midfielder (due to caicedo injury) to protect defence, can avert danger/close gaps in space

Arsenal v Chelsea – Match Notes

As expected, the 4-2-3-1 against the 3-4-3 is giving us a really interesting game, particularly because both teams have approached it with a positive mindset. There are certain spaces neither side can completely control, especially when the game transitions, which is creating a really open tactical battle.

Arsenal in possession: Arsenal are again looking to build with the two sixes. I think there are two reasons for this: firstly, it gives them greater control during the possession phase; secondly, and perhaps more importantly, it gives them better protection when possession turns over. Keeping those two players underneath the ball provides Arsenal with a strong platform to manage the defensive transition.

Arsenal out of possession: This is probably the most interesting part so far. Arsenal are essentially operating from a 4-4-2 shape, but the press is asymmetric. The right-hand side is the aggressive pressing side, with Saka and Havertz looking to engage Chelsea’s back three and force the build towards one side. The left-hand side is then responsible for the balance, narrowing off and protecting the inside spaces rather than pressing with the same aggression. This also helps Arsenal deal with Palmer when he moves into those inside positions.

So rather than seeing it simply as a 4-4-2 press, I’d describe it as:

Right side = PRESS.
Left side = BALANCE.

Chelsea in possession: Another interesting detail is Chelsea’s right-sided centre-back pushing extremely high, almost onto the attacking line. The question is how much this actually gives Chelsea in the possession phase beyond pinning Arsenal back and increasing the distances Arsenal have to defend. The potential downside is significant: if Chelsea lose possession with that player so high, Arsenal immediately have space to attack in transition.

Early picture: Great game so far and pretty much everything we expected tactically. Both teams are trying to impose themselves rather than simply cancelling each other out, and the different solutions they’re using to control the opposition’s attacking threats are making it a fascinating watch.
