Use "a" before a consonant:
A pen, a book, a child, a girl.
Use "a" before "h" when the "h" sounds: A horse, a hospital...

Use "an" before a vowel an "h" when the "h" doesn't sound:
An orange, an apple, an hour, an elephant...
