What an incredible act of courage and selflessness. 47-year-old Derrick Moore, a teacher from Georgia, is being remembered as a hero after he jumped into the ocean to help a young girl who was caught in a powerful rip current at Myrtle Beach. Around 5:30 p.m. Friday, August 7, the young girl became caught in a rip current near 4th Avenue South. Derrick didn't know her. He didn't hesitate. He saw a child in trouble and went into the water to help. Authorities say Derrick was then pulled away by the rip current. The heartbreaking incident happened after lifeguards had already gone off duty for the day. Myrtle Beach Police, Myrtle Beach Fire Department and the U.S. Coast Guard searched for him. His body was tr@gically found the following morning near 11th Avenue South. His family says Derrick was a teacher from Georgia and confirmed that the little girl was a complete stranger to him.
His daughter shared ❤️ “We loved him and are truly heartbroken that he’s gone. He was a great father, and we are all going to miss him.”
Derrick Moore saw someone else's child in danger and made the decision to risk his own life trying to save hers. That is HEROISM. 💔
