Five Weeks Earlier

The day started perfectly. The sun shone brightly through my window, and I could smell coffee brewing in the kitchen. I was excited this was going to be my day. I hummed a song as I got dressed, smiling at myself in the mirror.

The doors slammed shut, and the siren blared as we raced to the hospital. I could barely see the bright lights flashing above me as they wheeled me into the operating room.
Then, I heard it. One voice, calm but serious: “It’s confirmed.”
