58 years ago today, The Band released their debut album, Music From Big Pink.

The record was born inside a pink house in West Saugerties, New York, where Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel, Garth Hudson, and Levon Helm hammered these songs into shape. They crafted a sound that pulled rock back toward something older and truer, across eleven timeless tracks including "The Weight," "Tears of Rage," and "I Shall Be Released."

Today marks the anniversary of Before the Flood, the live album documenting Bob Dylan and The Band's historic 1974 tour.

As Robbie Robertson recalled in his book, Testimony:

"Now here we were, playing Bob’s songs hard and direct, the same as before, and the world was accepting it with open arms. We hadn’t given up. We didn’t come around. The world had come around. All we had were those tape recordings from the 1966 tour to go on—we knew that music was real when there were many nonbelievers. We fought a good battle in ’66, but we won the war in ’74."
