There are certainly material ailments that affect the mind insomuch as there are material ailments that affect the body without the added variable of possession.

But what makes the modern conception of mental illness fascinating is the assumption that, unlike bodily ailments, mental illness is an immutable facet of a person’s identity.

The next tell is the modern tendency to rely on pharmaceuticals such as SSRIs, SNRIs, NDRIs, and MAOIs to treat mental illness, the majority of which are a known obstacle to successful exorcisms.

And the nail in the coffin is the gradual shift from societal care and concern for mental illness to cultural celebration of mental illness, all the while gradually assimilating heinous sin into the definition of mental illness.

In creation, moments of profound beauty emerge where opposites collide.

We must learn to dance in the evenings and mornings, where the “night” of:

“Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?”

intersects with the “day” of:

“His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire.”

Both night and day exist simultaneously for now, but every morning and evening, we receive glimpses of a future where:

“The city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb. By its light will the nations walk, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it, and its gates will never be shut by day—and there will be no night there.”

Soon after the Flood, the Lord provided us with Sodom and Gomorrah as a type of the Baptism of Fire that follows the Baptism of Water.

We see this shadow extended again in the New Covenant, when after the Gospel and the Baptism of the Spirit had come upon the world, Pompeii and Herculaneum were destroyed in a single day by fire.

Hence the ancient etching in the rubble of Pompeii: “Sodom and Gomorrah.”

The world has already suffered the judgement of water, but we await the judgement of fire that accompanies the revealing of the Sons of God and the glory of God coming upon creation.

Like water, fire has properties of both destruction and purification. As with any baptism, we will only pass safely through the elements if God is with us.

Every social, ecclesiological, and civil issue has been addressed by scripture, but our ability to see that is predicated on whether or not we truly recognize what exactly happened at Sinai.

If you think Sinai was a matter of Jewish culture, customs, and traditions, you neither understand the scriptures or history.

Sinai was not the ratification of “Jewishness”.

Sinai was where a transcendently holy, all-powerful, all-knowing, ever-present Being came to covenant with His people after smiting the foremost world superpower of that era. In so doing, He taught them how to live righteously in a post-Fall economy. His people were then properly reinstated as His imagers who were to display His glory to the nations, all of which would eventually be dominated by the Kingdom of Heaven by proxy of the Gospel’s promise and power, as the Law flowed forth from Zion.

This is Christ’s Kingdom. He is ruling and reigning. His Law and Gospel have gone out to the ends of the earth. The nations have been handed over to Him.

Every issue plaguing our society today is due to lawlessness and unbelief.

Repent and believe the Gospel of Jesus Christ and allow your life to be governed by the Law of God, all through the empowering work of the Holy Spirit.

God created water and used it to separate the domains. To cross from one domain to another then required a baptism of sorts. The waters below are associated with hades and tarturus, and the waters above are associated with the heavens, but neither are man’s allotted domain, which is the earth, and crossing into either domain is death to man. Yet in God’s mercy, man will descend into the depths of death only to ascend on high into the heavens, like Christ. Yet the focus of Christ is to beautify the Bride and the focus of the Bride is to bring glory to her husband through the beautification of creation - death risen up into life, and heaven descending upon the earth.

But the righteousness based on faith says, “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’” (that is, to bring Christ down) “or ‘Who will descend into the abyss?’” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim). -Romans 10:6-8

I am always fascinated to see how the poem of creation correlates to the truth contained in the word of God, and for years, I believed that the discerning man would recognize something wrong with venturing into outer space, seeing it as a domain unkind to embodied spirits, like how I felt freediving off the coast of California into the dark and cold of the sea.

Today, I came across this quote from William Shatner:

“Last year, I had a life-changing experience at 90 years old. I went to space, after decades of playing an iconic science-fiction character who was exploring the universe. I thought I would experience a deep connection with the immensity around us, a deep call for endless exploration.
I was absolutely wrong. The strongest feeling, that dominated everything else by far, was the deepest grief that I had ever experienced.
I understood, in the clearest possible way, that we were living on a tiny oasis of life, surrounded by an immensity of death. I didn’t see infinite possibilities of worlds to explore, adventures to have, or living creatures to connect with. I saw the deepest darkness I could have ever imagined, contrasting so starkly with the welcoming warmth of our nurturing home planet.
This was an immensely powerful awakening for me. It filled me with sadness. I realized that we had spent decades, if not centuries, being obsessed with looking away, with looking outside. I did my share in popularizing the idea that space was the final frontier. But I had to get to space to understand that Earth is and will stay our only home. And that we have been ravaging it, relentlessly, making it uninhabitable."

None of this is to say that it is wrong to explore the waters above or below, rather that it is apparent that God, while giving us dominion of the creatures contained in these domains, did not intend for us to enter in to those domains and subdue them. Our role was to expand the borders of Eden and subdue the earth. I suspect that our forays into other domains will never yield an exit strategy, but will only yield knowledge and understanding of creation useful to our created end.
