I understand the concern, but I don’t think forcing Bukangi out with a huge net is the right answer.

She is not physically trapped, stranded on land, or stuck somewhere she cannot move. She is freely swimming in the waterway and has repeatedly been able to move around on her own.

There also appears to be enough food in the waterway. Copper sharks feed on animals like fish and octopus, and local fishers have said there are plenty of fish and octopus there. Octopus is one of the foods copper sharks commonly eat.

Sharks also have highly developed senses and strong navigation abilities. Bukangi came into this waterway by herself, and unless there is clear evidence that she is physically unable to leave, I don’t think we should automatically assume she is “lost.”

If intervention is truly necessary, it should be done in the safest and least stressful way possible. Chasing and pushing her with a massive net, especially when she keeps resisting it, can cause unnecessary stress or injury.

Sometimes protecting wildlife also means giving the animal space and letting it make its own movement.
