Burnley have won their legal dispute with Everton after seeking damages for the Merseyside club’s breach of the Premier League’s financial rules.
Everton intend to appeal the decision.
Burnley had been seeking damages after Everton were found guilty of breaching the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules (PSR) during the 2021-22 season — a campaign in which Burnley were relegated from the top flight.
The Athletic reported Burnley would argue they would have stayed up if Everton were sanctioned with a points deduction for their 2021-22 PSR breach that season. Everton finished four points above Burnley to retain their Premier League status, and ultimately received a six-point deduction for the breach in 2023-24.
As a result of their relegation, Burnley missed out on significant income that rewards playing in the top-flight. This includes the Premier League TV deal and commercial opportunities.
The Athletic reported Burnley had been seeking as much as £60m for lost earnings.
After initially disputing the breach, Everton admitted to overspending their limit by £19.5m. They were punished with a 10-point penalty in November 2023, which was later reduced to six points.
