In 1827, the average musket barrel made at an armory in the US weighed 4 pounds 8 ounces. Lack of quality control allowed barrels that varied by up to 9 ounces in either direction to still pass final inspection. #guns #history #qualitycontrol

X-ray of a Brown Bess musket recovered from an American Revolutionary War era shipwreck lost in December 1782. It is believed to be a 1769 Short Land Pattern, and is loaded with buck and ball.
