This is a perfect example of how you can use a real statistic to create a completely misleading picture.
1.3 million sounds insane until you add the context. There are now 8.4 million people on Universal Credit in total, also a record high. Non UK immigration groups make up around 15.5% of claimants and that share has actually FALLEN over the last year. Nearly 9% of all UC claimants are under the EU Settlement Scheme and another 2.8% have Indefinite Leave to Remain. These are overwhelmingly not people who arrived in Britain last week and immediately started claiming benefits.
Universal Credit also isn’t just an unemployment benefit. Around half of non UK claimants are actually in work. For people under the EU Settlement Scheme specifically 57.4% of those claiming UC are employed.
There absolutely should be restrictions on someone moving here and immediately accessing the welfare state. I don’t think that’s unreasonable at all. But lumping together people who were born here, have lived, worked and paid tax here for years, people with permanent residency, refugees and recent migrants into one scary sounding “1.3 million migrants claiming benefits” headline tells you basically nothing.
The way this is being presented is just missing almost every bit of context you would need to actually understand it.
@wesstreeting If we can’t afford an nhs where doctors are paid fantastic salaries and work in fantastic conditions we are getting it wrong. Or, I should say, YOU are getting it wrong.
Being a uk nhs doctor should be a great option for a great life, never a sacrifice. Have some pride.
Can you believe humans were literally gifted a planet overflowing with trees, food, water, medicine, and sunshine?
Yet somehow we said, “Let’s invent debt, political parties, and war.”
The most surreal moment of this by-election campaign is when Green candidate Hannah Spencer accused me of causing the Manchester Evening News Arena terror bombing
No, Hannah
That was radical Islamism
Zack Polanski is the most effective left-wing communicator in Britain for generations.
This is it.
This is the chance.
And we'll probably not get another one.

I think having a Sunday roast every week is almost as filthy a habit as smoking. It’s arguably the shittest meal and you want to make it a weekly event? Be serious.
Very angry with @skytv for upselling a new TV package to a customer they’d been notified had dementia - and doing this *one month* after I cancelled on the customer’s behalf because they weren’t aware they’d signed up in the first place.
When challenged, Sky’s customer service response was that the customer technically ‘agreed’ to the upsell.
For me, this raises serious concerns about how vulnerable customers are being treated and whether @Ofcom guidelines for this group are actually being followed.
