Promoting Safe Workspaces: POSH Awareness Program at NCPOR

The two-day Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) Act Awareness Program, held on 8–9 December 2025 at NCPOR, concluded successfully, reaffirming the institute’s dedication to maintaining a safe, inclusive, and respectful workplace.

In the closing session, Dr. Thamban Meloth, Director, NCPOR, welcomed the Chief Guest, Adv. Caroline Collaso, Senior Advocate, social activist, and external member of NCPOR’s Internal Committee. In his remarks, he underscored the importance of awareness and sensitivity in ensuring a secure environment for all employees.

Adv. Collaso delivered an insightful address, emphasizing the shared responsibility of promoting dignity and safety in professional settings.

The event concluded with a prize distribution ceremony honouring the winners of the pencil art and elocution competitions, which encouraged creative expression around the theme of workplace safety.

Strengthening Research Pathways in Polar & Ocean Science

The 24th Research Advisory Committee (RAC) Meeting with a new leadership and composition was held at #NCPOR, Goa, from 04–05 December 2025 under the chairmanship of Dr. Rasik Ravindra, a veteran polar scientist and former Director, NCPOR. The meeting reviewed the institute’s scientific progress in the polar and ocean realms. The critical assessment, insightful recommendations, and guidance provided by the #RAC members continue to play a pivotal role in strengthening NCPOR’s scientific endeavours. Three international experts - Dr. Petra Heil (British Antarctic Survey), Dr. Kenny Matsuoka (Norwegian Polar Institute) and Dr. Frank Lamy (Alfred Wegener Institute) provided an international perspectives to NCPOR's vision.

A high-level delegation from the Emirates Polar Program (EPP), UAE-Mr. Wassim Said (Advisor, International Affairs), Ms. Loulia Mohamad AlKhatib (Researcher, International Affairs), Prof. Samuel Mao, and Dr. Aisha Al Suwaidi (Khalifa University, Polar Research Centre)-visited the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR), Goa.

They were welcomed by Dr. Thamban Meloth, Director, NCPOR, who highlighted India’s major polar and ocean programs and NCPOR’s leadership in their execution. Dr. Rahul Mohan (Group Director, Polar Sciences) presented the Indian Antarctic Program’s scientific themes and initiatives, Dr. Shailendra Saini (Antarctic Operations) discussed logistics and infrastructure, and Dr. Manish Tiwari (Arctic Operations) outlined the Indian Arctic Program.

Mr. Wassim Said emphasized the importance of collaboration, proposing joint use of the UAE’s deep-sea research vessel, research in Greenland, and support for Maitri II as a sub-station-level observatory. Dr. Aisha Al Suwaidi shared the EPP’s vision, mission, and new research initiatives.

Both teams explored areas of cooperation, including academic exchanges, capacity building, and joint expeditions. The visit included a tour of NCPOR’s labs and an immersive virtual Antarctica experience.
