I didn’t watch the Trabzonspor match live as I was on a 6-hour flight without internet access. I watched it later this morning though, great win.

I posted before “Galatasaray without Osimhen are an expensive Kasimpasa” and we’ve seen this again last night.

But, I’m doing the same mistake most Turkish media are doing since the game ended by making last night’s massacre about Galatasaray losing and framing the conversation around Galatasaray being bad, instead of focusing on how Trabzonspor players and coach were outstanding.

This was the perfect game for Reis to start his reign as Trabzonspor’s new coach and for Salah to cement his status as the Turkish League’s new king.

Reis is at his best when his team surrenders possession (46% vs Galatasaray) and relies on counter-attacks in open space, long balls (62 vs Galatasaray), score a goal then defend that goal for the rest of the match (timing of the 1st goal affected both teams game plan) or capitalize on gaps created by scoring a second or a third from more counterattacks (3 goals last night from counterattack situations).

Reis’ approach works if you have players capable of progressing the ball quickly and for a clinical forward to capitalize. Both were there last night with the first (video) and fourth goal would even impress the likes of Klopp during his Liverpool days.

Reis is also about defensive compactness. This was not present last night with Trabzonspor defensively vulnerable (yes, 0 goals conceded, I know). This will take time to achieve as it requires signing a new midfielder and injured Batagov to return in the backline. But, more importantly having “smart” compactness requires fitness (the team is currently capable of solid 60 minutes not 90) and a lot of training to connect the three lines together. Hopefully the new fitness coach added will help here.

Salah shines in games against big clubs with big ego (e.g., Liverpool vs Man City) as a team like City attack to score goals and are not about sitting back on a low block suffocating space and being tight with 2 defenders on players like Salah.

Last night Galatasaray played the perfect Salah game with all the space he was given and not constantly crowding him (City made the same mistake vs Salah many times) while a team like Konyaspor just last week managed Salah better as they made the final third congested with defenders and midfielders. He was given very little space to score or connect (just twice in the whole game). Konyaspor played like Forest or Burnley in the PL (two teams where Salah didn’t score a lot of goals comparatively speaking).

The good news from Trabzonspor, organized low block teams like Konyaspor in most cases become less organized once they concede first or get tired from all the defending. Trabzonspor vs Konyaspor missed 3 big chances that could’ve totally changed the game’s performance, result and our perception of Salah in it.

Salah scored more than 250 goals at Liverpool with other teams knowing “the how” described above, but in most cases failed to implement it as players like Salah almost always find a way.

The success last night was also about the outstanding midfield with Fabinho (2nd MOTM) and Melih (had a huge game, love his calm seriousness).

Onana is totally growing on me and had another mature performance and hopefully will be even better with a settled midfield and backline in front of him.

Saviolo is proving himself indispensable to Reis with a huge engine and ability to score (especially from very low xG like last night).

This was a great start for Reis and I posted before my skepticism of his selection, but I’m the first to admit I was wrong (and an idiot) if he manages to find the right balance at Trabzonspor.
