This Tuesday at 5:30 at Ida B Wells legislative plaza in Nashville Tennessee Equality Project is hosting a vigil for Nex Benedict, a 17-year old non-binary child that was slain in Oklahoma. QUILT and DSA members are encouraged to attend in solidarity and respect.

This is what was at the heart of our budget demands in the summer. Youth in this city have nowhere to feel safe, supported, and uplifted. We must ensure institutions like schools and community education can help fill this void.

This is the harsh reality that students and teachers face each day in schools with police.

In 2022 an SRO pepper sprayed a kid at Hunters Lane. That same officer, three months prior, shot someone (while off duty) at the scene of a car wreck. Paramedics had already arrived.

SROs, particularly when they have violent records, do not keep students or faculty safe. We must expose the horrific realities that these figures bring to students, especially ones from marginalized communities. We must begin to invest in alternatives that build students up.

The State of Tennessee broke ground this morning on their own new cop city that will house the TN Dept of Safety, Homeland Security, & TN Dept of Corrections. The site is located on 800+ acres of beautiful rolling hills immediately next to 2 prisons & will include a mock village.

🧵 - Thanks to @GinnyWelsch's work on the council, we are extremely excited to announce that there are amendments to reinstitute the Community Education Commission. Amendments 6, 9, 11, & 12 all include bringing back community education, #2 of our budget demands. 1/3

(2/3) CM Welsch also has amendments that still include freezing the increase to MNPD, #1 of our budget demands. These amendments are 7, 8, 10, 13. We wholeheartedly endorse all of CM Welsch's amendments.

We hope to have a breakdown soon, but the new substitution budget @kevinrhoten proposed is a shame. None of the concerns raised by students were addressed. We must see a return to the community education program & prioritization of student mental health. These are not targeted.

Our chapter has learned that the members of Coffee Workers of the South United working at Three Brothers have gone on strike. We support this action taken by the workers as they fight for the bosses to negotiate and meet their fair demands of $16 an hour plus tips. 1/
