An (authorised) visit to Hilden Mill #Lisburn last week. It's sad to see the state of the site. Linen thread wasn't sexy but it was ubiquitous, and Barbour Threads was a global brand. The buildings are a monument to our great industrial past, and we shouldn't lose them.
A handloom weaver from the Irish Linen Centre in Lisburn has been shortlisted in the prestigious UK Presidents’ Award for Endangered Crafts organised by the Heritage Crafts. Donna Campbell, a linen damask weaver at Lisburn Museum, is one of only three craftspeople to have been shortlisted for the UK award which was created to help secure the survival of endangered and critically endangered crafts.*

🟩 Nowhere in Ulster were the ideas of democracy, steeped in the principles of 'liberty, equality, fraternity', more welcome than in the quaint little village of Saintfield. Co.Down. The reason is not far to seek. The Rev. Thomas Leslie Birch, Minister of the local Presbyterian Church was an apostle of these new ideas and he converted many of his flock.
When Wolfe Tone founded the first Society of UnitedIrishmen in Belfast, Birch very quickly followed suit and formed the very first United Irish Society in Co.Down at his manse, which was named 'Liberty Hall'.

The owners of Hilden Mill, near Lisburn, have filed an application for the demolition of listed buildings, with the part retention of two buildings adjacent to Mill St. The site location plan suggests it would involve demolishing the majority of the mill.
Fascinating. Sgt McCarthy went to the Isle of Man to look out for Swanzy. He settled in #Lisburn. I visited the remains of his house and spoke with family. He continued communicating with Irene Swanzy, living in Fiji, until the 1950s. Correspondence is held in @Lisburn_Museum
In April 1920, following the murder of the Lord Mayor of Cork, Tomás MacCurtain, RIC District Inspector Oswald Swanzy went into hiding in the #IsleOfMan, pursued by four men from Cork. He was assassinated in Lisburn in August 1920. [Ref: S17/1/101] #HiddenHistories#Archive30
Delighted go have our small team in the weaving workshop recognised with a nomination for the @heritage_crafts President's Award. Damask weaving is critically endangered but we're doing our best to preserve and reimagine the art!
Following a strong year full of high-quality nominations, the finalists for the first tranche of this year’s Heritage Crafts Awards, have been announced. Further shortlists for other awards will be announced at the end of the summer. https://t.co/mfzPAQLNSR
This is brilliant! @mcrartgallery have a cold case section in their exhibition. Visitors/researchers can explore the records of individual objects, make suggestions and help the gallery find out more information on unknown objects.
