Yesterday Lenny interviewed Vikrama (SVP Product @ GoJek) on advice for early career PMs.

Vikrama is a gem of a person: 4 years ago when I was struggling to find my 1st PM hire, he spent a significant amount of time walking me through the process; and, I know he has done this for countless other startup founders (w/o ever asking for anything in return).

There are 3 big takeaways from Vikrama’s interview: ⤵️

(1) What makes a great PM?

- Ability to have up difficult discussions w/o being difficult to work with
- Being able to get decisions made w/o being the one making all the decisions
- Being able to bring up important subjects w/o making oneself as the center of importance

(This is Vikrama’s philosophy; which also applies for any non-PM role that requires working thru stakeholders to achieve a shared outcome)

(2) 3Ws framework (to level up as a PM)

- What do you bring to the table?
- What do you produce? (artifacts e.g. PRDs, Release Notes, PRFAQs etc)
- What is your operating model?

(Vikrama raises a fab point that many PMs let their artifacts rot e.g. tickets with only a header or release notes which are unusable. The great ones stand out on this input.)

(3) Few other nuances of life as a PM

- Don’t over-index yourself as a {X} type of PM (e.g. if you anchor yourself on collaborative - you might end up NOT being decisive because you want to keep everyone happy)
- Another antipattern: proclaiming oneself as high agency often provides the cover for being brash

➡️I’m glad Lenny got Vikrama on - he’s a gem of a person + a great person to represent the PM community in India / SE Asia.

Good example is GoJEK, a super app in Asia where you can do everything from ordering an “Uber”, moto bike, food, coffee, massage, top up phone credits, save and invest money, send packages and more
