If CLI's were the optimal UI, desktop apps would just replicate them (as they're a superset in capability). Instead what's happening is the opposite -- poorly.
AI is under 0.5% of global emissions. US golf courses use ~30x more water than every US data centre combined. A year of daily chatbot use emits less CO2 than one beef burger.
Here's where the other 99.5% actually is: https://t.co/VukVx53t3H
Can AI really be creative?
I think the ability to heat-sense brilliance amongst an infinite noise of possibilities, and bring to life, makes a creative.
The greatest musicians, mathematicians and even founders in history were all creatives.
And I think a beautiful part of it all is the elusive asymmetry that often exists: easy to validate, but almost impossible to originate.
It’s completely obvious that we should have... but no one else did it before...
The legendary Srinivasa Ramanujan was a self-taught mathematician who landed directly on non-obvious truths through pure intuition. Cambridge professors marvelled at his work as a professional pianist would Mozart's.
Ramanujan was not only a brilliant mathematician, but a brilliant creative.
Modern deep learning does something analogous. It uses patterns learned across enormous amounts of data to sense where promising answers might lie.
A kind of statistical heat-sensing.
Today, AI has started to push the frontier of mathematics.
This is where that elusive asymmetry tricks people: because a result is easy to validate once it exists, sceptics already minimise the achievement.
But it is reaching conclusions no human has reached before. And that’s the important part.
The argument that LLMs are “stochastic parrots” merely mimicking human intelligence and creativity breaks down when the parrot starts inventing proofs, concepts and poems never heard before.
I think the more interesting question is: what, if anything, remains unique about human creativity?
Must empathy be a prerequisite for creativity? Wouldn’t that mean psychopaths can’t be artists?
Maybe the expression of lived experience makes real art - so Frank Sinatra wasn’t a real artist because he didn’t write “My Way”?
Or perhaps you need to be able to physically interact with the world. So we’ll have the first creative AI when you plug ChatGPT up to a 1X robot.
Anyway, AI-generated songs - whatever that means - aren’t sweeping the Grammys today.
But interestingly, as AI gets more conventionally creative, it also becomes less noticeable.
Here’s a cover with over 200,000,000 streams that most don’t realise was created with AI:

I think every one of us will eventually, if not already, be moved by art created using AI.
When that happens, it'll reframe how we think about art.
@dvdaltizer@dvdaltizer Checkout https://t.co/hG4hbFgKfP - its what Adobe + Claude should have been. Has MCP integration too via https://t.co/sfbuiCyHdz
We used to have to pay creators hundreds of dollars, now I can use apps like TwoShot to shoot ad creatives, add captions, transitions, etc...
Here's how i made this add in literally seconds: https://t.co/rRBI5dWtad
