Cheap rent in Lagos? Might not be as cheap as you think

We compared 3 workers living in Ikorodu, Oshodi & Yaba, commuting daily to CMS and once transport costs are added in, that huge rent gap almost disappears.

📍 Ikorodu: ₦550k rent + ₦1.95m transport = ₦2.5m
📍 Oshodi: ₦1.5m rent + ₦1.04m transport = ₦2.54m
📍 Yaba: ₦2m rent + ₦910k transport = ₦2.91m

Moral of the story: don’t just check the rent, check the full cost of living there.

On January 27, 2002, a fire reached the Nigerian Army’s Ammunition Transit Depot at Ikeja Military Cantonment in Lagos, triggering a series of devastating explosions. High-calibre bombs, mortars, grenades, rockets and shells tore through the barracks and surrounding neighbourhoods, destroying homes, schools and businesses across Ikeja, Oshodi, Isolo, Ejigbo and Ajao Estate.

But the explosions were only the beginning. With no evacuation plan and rumours spreading that a military coup was underway, tens of thousands of terrified residents fled into the darkness. At the Oke-Afa canal, water hyacinth concealed the water’s surface, making it appear to be solid ground. Hundreds of people, many of them children, fell or were pushed into the canal and drowned. Nigeria’s official death toll was approximately 700, although the Red Cross reported recovering at least 1,000 bodies. Thousands more were injured, displaced or separated from their families.

More than two decades later, nobody has been held accountable. Questions remain over an estimated ₦800 million donated for disaster relief, with many victims’ families saying they never received the compensation promised by President Olusegun Obasanjo’s government. Meanwhile, the Oke-Afa Memorial Arcade has fallen into disrepair.

Through the stories of Sauli Adunni, Surajudeen Kareem, Olaniran Majekodunmi and other survivors, this film revisits one of the deadliest and most controversial disasters in Nigerian history, a preventable tragedy defined by military negligence, mass panic, missing relief funds and families still waiting for justice.
