In a broadcasting career that spanned five decades, John Stapleton was one of ITV’s most trusted and respected news journalists and a much loved face of breakfast television. We are saddened to hear of his passing and we send our love and very deepest sympathies to his family and friends, as well as his many ITV colleagues who will always remember him fondly.
In Parliament yesterday, I challenged Richard Burgess, the BBC Director of News Content, about the RAF surveillance flights over Gaza - and why the BBC barely covers them.
He deflected and pretended it wasn’t important.
@AadamHaladh A good, insightful piece. You've done well to define why it is that Real have that special aura. And Guardiola vs Ancelotti is always a compelling clash because they are such contrasting characters with different approaches to the game
@AtTheRaces Old. Each one an icon. And there are other greats of that era not mentioned there (Denman, Best Mate, Hardy Eustace, Long Run) who were better than the best of the 'new' era
@AaronBastani Disagree. The ST still has many of the best writers and reporters in Fleet Street. The op-ed section needs a real left-wing columnist to provide more balance but the news reporting and scoops are still the best in the business.
Also surprised at the relative lack of coverage from much of the British media of Hurricane Helena - mainland America's deadliest hurricane since Katrina - which has killed at least 240 people. It seems to have been very quickly dropped from much of the UK media's news agenda
Saw the NBC Nightly News on Thursday - America's most-watched evening newscast. There was no reporting in the entire half-hour bulletin about the situation in the Middle East. A massive story, completely ignored. Huge contrast to the UK media where it dominates.
A Sunday Times reviewer describes a part of the latest book by famed U.S. novellist Richard Powers as having "all the writerly flair of a mid-career footballer autobiography". Ouch!
Days in government before governing party's polling average went under 30 percent:
1993 Major - 397
1968 Wilson - 664
2019 May - 675
1981 Thatcher - 676
2022 Johnson - 762
2008 Brown - 1,082
2004 Blair - 1,104
2024 Starmer - 70?
"I'm going to shock you now, I think we should have a general election and give Labour a go."
Mike Graham shocks the panel by saying the Conservative Party have "broken" themselves and Labour should be in charge after the next election.

Lots of overblown criticism of Harris doing her first interview as Dem nominee alongside her VP pick.
A poll said 71% of Americans had never heard of Tim Walz when he was announced. What better way to introduce him than by including him in Harris' much-anticipated interview?
Pretty spineless for the woman seeking to smash the ultimate feminist glass ceiling and become America’s first female president, to need a bloke beside her for this interview to hold her hand. I hope Dana’s first question is: ‘Madam Vice President, what’s HE doing here?’
"The comic moments and inventive action sequences come thick and fast in the franchise's full-tilt fourth instalment"

And here comes John Swinney, who isn't standing for election, no one in the audience can vote for, and who has absolutely no desire whatsoever to be prime minister of the United Kingdom. I still, after fourteen years of this, just absolutely don't get it.
"This intense dystopic thriller is unquestionably timely, but a dearth of context quietens its political alarm bell"
