Assyrian Christian refugees fleeing the Simele Massacre in Iraq (7–11 August 1933) on their journey to the newly established Assyrian villages along the Khabour River in Syria. Survivors of one tragedy rebuilt their lives there with faith, resilience, and hope—only for their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren to be forced to flee once again after ISIS attacked the Khabour villages in 2015. 🕯️🌹❤️

In August 1933, the Assyrian Christian people suffered one of the darkest chapters in their history: the Simele Massacre in Iraq. 🕯️ Thousands of innocent Assyrian Christian men, women, and children were brutally murdered, and more than 100 Assyrian Christian villages across northern Iraq were attacked, looted, and destroyed. 🌹 Their only "crime" was remaining faithful to their Assyrian Christian identity and preserving their ancient faith, language, and heritage. The massacre, carried out by the Iraqi Army with the participation of some Kurdish tribal forces that supported the Iraqi government, left a wound that has never healed. ❤️

🕯️ The surviving Assyrian Christians fled across the border to Syria, where they rebuilt their lives along the Khabour River, founding 35 Assyrian Christian villages. 🌹 From the ashes of one tragedy in Iraq, they created new homes, churches, schools, and thriving communities in Syria, believing they had finally found safety and a future.

🌹 Yet the same Assyrian Christian community would suffer another devastating tragedy in a second country.

In 2015, the Islamic State (ISIS) attacked those same Khabour villages in Syria, murdering Assyrian Christians, kidnapping hundreds, and forcing thousands to flee once again. 🕯️ More than 250 Assyrian Christians—including women, children, and the elderly—were taken hostage. Many endured months of captivity under horrific conditions before being released through difficult negotiations, while others were brutally executed simply because of their Christian faith.

❤️ It was the very same Assyrian Christian community—the children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren of the Simele survivors—who were once again driven from their homes.

From Simele in Iraq to Khabour in Syria. Two great tragedies across two countries. One Assyrian Christian community. Tragedy after tragedy. Generation after generation.

❤️ For nearly a century, the Assyrian Christian people have endured massacres, persecution, displacement, and exile, yet they have never abandoned their faith, identity, or hope.

🕯️ On this 93rd anniversary of the Simele Massacre, we remember the martyrs, honor the survivors, and pray that justice, peace, and dignity will one day prevail for the Assyrian Christian people.
