This is worth every second to read. Not just for this case, but for understanding the dynamics that lead individuals to ignore solid evidence of abuse.
@RobertDownen_ You have brought necessary light on a difficult & evil subject. Know that your work has positively benefited so many, & it continues to do so, even as you have spoken here. For the lack of truth tellers, people are easily misled.
@DannySlavich So if egalitarianism is not liberalism, what’s the rationale for making complementarianism a second order issue? Why should we not treat it like we do eschatological views or the extent of the atonement? Why not cooperate with orthodox churches that have a woman called “pastor”?
I stayed an extra day in Indy with a dear friend & advocate @DrHeatherEvans & I needed time with her like I needed air. I’m sitting on a plane about to leave this city & it feels I’m leaving all hope for change here as well. I feel defeat, sorrow, exhaustion even at a bone level +
@biblebeltman Religion reporters are doing their best to understand what we’re doing and our process for doing it and then accurately report it. I’ve been impressed by their efforts & found the coverage by @liamsadams@kateshellnutt@bobsmietana@publicroad & others to be excellent. My 2 cents
For me, the most impactful moments of #SBC24 this year were the opportunities I had outside the meeting to pray for and be prayed for by fellow brothers and sisters in Christ.
@laurel_prolife@Smith_Jeffrey I was an exhibitor this year. Announcements were made preceding the voting times to alert messengers. The exhibit hall largely emptied at those times. Still, I had fruitful convos with non-messenger guests & those who weren’t interested in the business at hand during those times.
If the sex abuse crisis has taught me anything it’s that virtually nothing the messengers do, beyond voting for president and affirming committee nominations is binding.
@Joy_Anisa@kateshellnutt@joleejo216 @peedeelou Wikipedia offers this definition: “The motion to censure is a main motion expressing a strong opinion of disapproval that could be debated by the assembly and adopted by a majority vote.” See the actual motion below.
Motion from @peedeelou regarding censure. #SBC24#ThisistheSBC “I move that the messengers censure Albert Mohler, Ben Mandrell, & Bart Barber for their roles in approving an amicus brief in the state of Kentucky that prevented an abuse survivor from having her day in court…
So, honestly, what function does an annual meeting serve? Why do we come as messengers? Beyond elections, what is the purpose of voting at all if SBC leaders are going to do or not do whatever they want regardless of the “will of the messengers?”
