Si. On a essayé. Une vingtaine de fois. Sur quatre continents. Pendant un siècle. Et on a les chiffres.

Chine, Grand Bond en avant (1958–1962). Les historiens indépendants ayant accédé aux archives provinciales convergent sur une fourchette de 30 à 45 millions de morts. Frank Dikötter (Université de Hong Kong), à partir des archives du PCC, retient 45 millions, dont 2,5 millions battus à mort ou exécutés par la milice. Yang Jisheng, ancien journaliste de l'agence Xinhua, dix ans d'enquête, retient 36 millions dans Stèles. L'historien chinois Yu Xiguang, vingt ans de recherche, monte à 55 millions. Pour donner une échelle : c'est la totalité des morts de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, concentrée sur quatre ans, dans un seul pays, sans guerre.

URSS. Holodomor 1932–1933, famine planifiée en Ukraine, reconnue comme génocide par le Parlement européen le 15 décembre 2022. Goulag, Grandes Purges 1936–1938, déplacements forcés de populations entières. Le bilan retenu par le Livre noir du communisme tourne autour de 20 millions de morts pour l'ensemble de la période.

Cambodge, Pol Pot. Environ 2 millions de morts en moins de quatre ans, soit près d'un quart de la population. S-21, Choeung Ek, évacuation forcée des villes en quelques jours.

Corée du Nord, Vietnam, Europe de l'Est, Afrique communiste, Amérique latine. Encore plusieurs millions cumulés.

Bilan global retenu par le Livre noir du communisme : environ 100 millions de morts. Chiffre repris en 2006 par la résolution 1481 de l'Assemblée parlementaire du Conseil de l'Europe, et en 2023 par une résolution au Parlement européen. On peut discuter la marge — 80, 90, 100 millions selon les méthodologies — mais comme l'écrivait Laurent Joffrin dans Libération, pourtant pas suspect de complaisance avec la droite : à 60 millions au lieu de 100, le communisme deviendrait-il présentable ?

Et le contre-exemple « doux » ? Venezuela. Pas de goulag, pas de famine planifiée. Juste l'application méthodique du programme. Résultat sur dix ans : le PIB s'est contracté de plus de 75 % entre 2014 et 2021 — la plus grande contraction économique en temps de paix depuis 45 ans selon l'Institute of International Finance. Inflation annuelle de 130 060 % en 2018 selon la Banque centrale du Venezuela elle-même, dépassant 1 000 000 % la même année selon le FMI. Près de 8 millions de personnes — soit environ 25 % de la population — ont quitté le pays. Le plus grand exode de l'histoire de l'hémisphère occidental sur les 50 dernières années selon l'OEA et le HCR. En 2024, 82 % des Vénézuéliens vivaient dans la pauvreté, dont 53 % en extrême pauvreté.

Zéro exception. Zéro contre-exemple.

À chaque fois la même mécanique. Une caste auto-proclamée vertueuse s'empare du pouvoir au nom du peuple, et finit en nomenklatura planquée dans des datchas pendant que 99 % de la population fait la queue pour du pain. Quand Maduro distribuait ses CLAP — boîtes alimentaires rationnées et militarisées — c'était la même logique que Brejnev dans les magasins réservés de la nomenklatura, soixante ans plus tard, sous un drapeau différent.

Hayek avait tout prédit en 1944, dans La Route de la servitude. Et Mises encore avant, en 1920, avec le problème du calcul économique : quand tu remplaces les prix du marché par la planification centrale, tu détruis l'unique mécanisme capable d'agréger l'information dispersée dans des millions de têtes. Il te faut donc une autorité qui décide à la place de tous. Cette autorité ne peut pas connaître ce qu'elle prétend planifier, donc elle impose par la contrainte. Et comme ça échoue toujours — voir Venezuela, qui a appliqué la séquence à la lettre : contrôle des prix par la Fair Prices Act de 2014, puis nationalisations, puis hyperinflation, puis rationnement militarisé — il faut contraindre de plus en plus fort pour survivre.

La tyrannie n'est pas un dérapage du socialisme. C'est son équilibre logique.

Le capitalisme de marché n'est pas parfait. C'est juste le seul système connu dans l'histoire où des millions d'inconnus coopèrent sans qu'une caste armée les y oblige.

Les morts de Kolyma, du Laogai, de S-21 et des rues de Caracas vous demandent de ne pas recommencer.

At general conference I spoke of our grandson Paxton, who was born with a very rare chromosomal deletion.

Paxton lived three treasured years. He could not speak, crawl, walk, or run after his brothers. But little Paxton’s hands reached out to ours and to our Savior with love and affection.

I remember the first time Paxton’s father and I gave him a priesthood blessing that, as it says in the scriptures, “the works of God should be made manifest in him.” They were.

He brought immense joy to our family. Families with such a precious member know what a privilege it is to be blessed with one with special needs.

Associating with Paxton, our whole family gained an increased, deep, and abiding trust in the Lord. Then God reached out and took him home.

The words of the psalmist say it all: “Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning” (Psalm 30:5). That joy is, as the Savior said, “Because I live, ye shall live also” (John 14:19).

I know Paxton’s tender “spirit and [his] body shall be reunited again in … perfect form” (Alma 11:43). By the power of the Atonement of Jesus Christ, his joy will be in not only a resurrected body but one that is resurrected whole and perfect.

i'm coming to an unfortunate realization:

just as covid was a once in a lifetime all singing all dancing happy place jamboree for agoraphobes, hysterics, and scolds, so too was it the happy place for the poorly calibrated conspiracy boffin and the overwrought paranoid.

the "branch covidians" got to stay home, cover their faces, avoid humans, obsess about germs, and had a lovely time screeching and shrilling at everyone and casting their longstanding social anxieties and failings as virtue.

but these were also great days for the overclocked pattern recognition engines of the obsessives. they racked up win after win because, for a hot minute, basically everything was a conspiracy and governments and health agencies and medical boards all around the world really were out to get them (and all of us).

you could blindfold yourself and could throw a dart in a random direction as far as you could and almost inevitably bullseye another horrendous set of plots and lies.

the "utterly hyperactive memetic immune system" finally came into its own.

but as the times covidian attentuated both lost their happy place.

the pro-covid "lock down, mask up, and jab, jab, jab!" crowd had to go back to being viewed as floundering frails and flailures and no one cared any more when they yelled about "but my allegedly compromised immune system! your mask protects me!"

but rather than simply taking the win and digging in on "let's get this data out into the public sphere, attach blame to the blameworthy, and make damn sure this never happens again" some of those who had opposed them remained massively immuno-activated.

i'm watching this now as group after group turn upon one another in some sort of maoist struggle session contest to accuse one another of lacking some form of ideological purity and, perhaps because of the reduction in outside forces attacking them, they now fight one another.

it feels like an autoimmune disease, a response that simply will not turn off and now assaults the healthy host, inflaming organs and tissues that it needs because it has lost sight of friend vs foe.

it's a disturbing thing to watch and a deeply harmful one. many from within a truly once in a lifetime group of individuals who stood up and collaborated during a time when so few would and who formed the kinds of networks and solution generation systems from which so much valuable insight poured now tear at one another over trifles, seemingly because they just need to keep attacking something and have lost calibration and down-modulation.

just one cat's opinion, but guys, there are better targets for this than one another.

we're only just now really starting to see the data and what the "authorities" and "experts" knew and did. this is the part where you can really dig out the problem and perhaps find some accountability.

is this really the moment to go full "obsessive purity test battle royale" on one another?

Let's talk for a minute about what the last FDA commissioner accomplished
He said misinformation was the leading cause of death, and it's cardiovascular disease, which you would think he would know, because he's a cardiologist.
He authorized the use of half a dozen boosters without running a single randomized trial powered for clinical outcomes, but on his way out said we should consider doing that. Why didn't you do it when you had the chance?
He approved a dozen cancer drugs that don't improve overall survival
In one case, sotorasib, the confirmatory trial was negative, so FDA had a duty withdraw the product, but it did not, it allows a second confirmatory trial. Thing about statistics is if you keep getting to try when you fail, but stop when you win, you inflate the p-value to basically 1.0.
The FDA commissioner recommended antivirals for covid saying they reduced the risk of long covid. This is a claim that specifically not granted by FDA.
The FDA did nothing to reduce the unnecessary animal studies that are done for drug products. These harm thousands of animals, but provide little guarantee of human outcomes.
The FDA took nearly no action on toxins in our food until the penultimate hour when they removed red dye number 3 because they knew RFK was going to do it
The FDA did not make it easier to approve generic drugs, that was done under Trump
The FDA did nothing to speed gene therapy, other than talk about how they will use uncontrolled endpoints. But we want to speed effective gene therapy, not ineffective gene therapy. The FDA had no solution for that.
The FDA took no action to stop the number of staff who go to work for the pharmaceutical industry immediately after departing. This revolving door is the core rot of the system.
It's really important to remember that most people who hold these positions are just doing it for themselves. They have no broader philosophy of regulatory science. They have no understanding of when randomized trials are needed and when they can be omitted. They are just doing this to add to their CV so that when they leave they can go to work and and consult for these companies.
Every cycle there's so much handwringing about who the nominee is. But the worst nominee is someone with no record of saying anything of substance in their entire career. Which is nearly every Biden nominee. They go on to do nothing of value, nothing to improve the American healthcare system, nothing to slow the rise of drug price, nothing too speed efficiency, literally nothing of value. Then they go off to collect a paycheck. The worst nominee is someone who you can't fact check because they never said anything of substance. I'm happy to do a post like this for every single post in healthcare in the last administration. As far as I can tell, they accomplished literally nothing of value. The FDA commissioner was particularly poor because he bungled some things beyond not improving.

And are we not all in need of repair, maintenance, and rehabilitation?

Artificial discipleship not only keeps us from seeing ourselves as who we really are, but it also prevents us from truly changing through the miracle of the Savior’s Atonement.

The Savior’s Church is a place of healing, not a place of despair, judgment, or sorrow. Jesus Christ, and living His restored gospel, can make of us the genuine, spiritual being of light and truth we desire to be.
