President John Dramani Mahama on Tuesday broke grounds for the beginning of construction works on the 120 hectares Tema Integrated Industrial Park (TIIP) at the industrial enclave of Tema.

The project is a joint venture involving the Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation (GIADEC), TDC Ghana Ltd, and ARISE Integrated Industrial Platforms.

President Mahama said the project marks the beginning of a new chapter in Ghana's economic transformation and reaffirms their determination to build an economy that produces more, exports more, creates more jobs and delivers shared prosperity.

He said TIIP represents the practical implementation of their vision to transform Ghana from a predominantly raw material-exporting economy into a competitive industrial nation.

Ghana’s “tampon tax” case reached the Supreme Court.

In Afedo v. Attorney-General, GRA & Ors (2026), the plaintiffs challenged what they alleged to be the imposition of Excise Duty and VAT on menstrual hygiene products, arguing that the tax treatment was discriminatory and inconsistent with constitutional guarantees of equality, economic rights, educational rights and human dignity.

The Supreme Court, however, dismissed the action on a preliminary jurisdictional objection.

The key point: the Court did not finally determine whether taxing menstrual hygiene products violates Article 17. Instead, it held that the plaintiffs had not properly invoked the Court’s original jurisdiction under Articles 2(1) and 130(1) of the 1992 Constitution.

The judgment also examines the limits of constitutional interpretation, the distinction between interpretation and enforcement, Parliament’s taxing power under Article 174, the public finance rules under Articles 176 and 178, and the evidential burden in public interest constitutional litigation.
