That performance isn’t just nostalgia. It’s the exact moment a background singer became the defining voice of Motown’s golden era.

Before “My Girl,” Ruffin was still the new guy. Eddie Kendricks and Paul Williams handled most of the leads. Ruffin had the range and the edge, but Motown hadn’t fully unlocked him yet. Then Smokey Robinson saw what others had missed.

It happened on the package tours. Smokey heard Ruffin’s distinctive voice—mellow yet gruff—during the Motown live shows and knew he had something special. He wanted to write something genuinely sweet for that voice, a song that would make the girls swoon instead of just admire from a distance.

So he and Ronald White wrote “My Girl.”

In the years that followed, Ruffin remained front and center on a string of Temptations classics—from “It’s Growing” and “Since I Lost My Baby” to “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg,” “I Wish It Would Rain,” and “(I Know) I’m Losing You.” The classic five-man lineup became untouchable.

But the real magic of “My Girl” isn’t chart history. It’s the way the song still works on the body. Those opening bass notes hit and people stand up without thinking. Fathers play it when they walk their daughters down the aisle. Crowds of every age sing the “talkin’ ’bout my girl” part like it’s brand new. "Ain't Nobody" almost never happened. Rufus initially rejected the song because its unusual drum machine pattern and minimalist arrangement sounded too different from the band's previous material. Keyboardist David "Hawk" Wolinski insisted on keeping it, believing it had the potential to become something special. According to Wolinski, producer Quincy Jones later wanted Michael Jackson to record the song for Thriller but he refused because he believed it belonged to Chaka Khan and Rufus.
