ECPD conference starts in Prague today! Petra Bilkova presents overview of diagnostics for COMPASS-U, many diagnostics will be shown in detail in the poster sessions
Good news on spherical tokamak performance was announced at the @APSphysics Plasma Physics conference. Initial analysis of results on our ST40 spherical tokamak indicates energy confinement increases more rapidly with magnetic field than would be expected with the ITER scaling used for conventional tokamaks. This is an important finding as we scale-up to the next generation of #fusion pilot plants.

This is the last photo from the ASDEX Upgrade vacuum vessel before the port was closed last Friday. The conversion team (some of whom can be seen in pic2) has been working intensively towards this day for two years. A new experiment phase will start very soon. #fusionenergy
Dr Tim Happel has been a Scientific Member of the Max Planck Society and Director at the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics (IPP) in Garching near Munich since 1 July 2024. https://t.co/uRFDgMO7ex #nuclearfusion#fusionenergy@maxplanckpress
We are excited to announce the leaders of our four new R&D departments! Marco Wischmeier, Volker Naulin, Gianfranco Federici and Joelle Elbez-Uzan will drive our mission towards achieving sustainable #fusionenergy. #road2fusion#fusionineurope#Euratom

2/2 Production of all major components (in total 170 tons) of the structure started with casting AISI 316LN stainless steel ingots. The last batch was cast last week by Valbruna company in Italy and delivered to a forge for further manufacturing steps.
1/2 Manufacturing of the COMPASS-U support structure is in full swing.
Large electromagnetic forces in the COMPASS Upgrade tokamak will be counteracted by a massive support structure.
Our ST40 spherical tokamak is the most advanced of its kind in the world. With our 2024 #plasma#physics campaign well underway, Plasma Operations Group Lead, Otto Asunta, looks at our achievements with ST40 so far and objectives for the year, including maximising our ‘triple product’; a key measure of progress on the path to realising commercial #fusion conditions.
Our work with ST40 is building the confidence, understanding and technology that supports the spherical tokamak as the optimal route to clean, affordable and globally deployable #fusionenergy

"Nejedná se o časový posun původního harmonogramu, ale o vypracování nového postupu při dokončování kompletace reaktoru, který bere v potaz jak dopady pandemie COVID-19, tak především nově získané poznatky a aktualizované vědecké priority."

A buzzing control room as we fire the first #plasma pulses of 2024 with our record-breaking ST40 spherical tokamak. Our overall mission is to verify and expand the #physics basis and develop technology for the high-field spherical tokamak route to commercial #fusionenergy ⚡
We’re currently in a commissioning phase. Watch this space for more details on our 2024 campaign objectives…
