I'm a marketing major, and let me say this; Branding is one of the most essential parts of a group's, company's, or brand's identity because it shapes how they are recognized by the public. The purpose of branding is to communicate the meaning, values, and identity of a brand in a way that people can instantly recognize and connect with. That's why the core elements of a brand become so important over time, they carry the history and meaning behind it.
Yes, rebranding is normal. Even Google recently updated its logo by moving from solid colors to a smoother gradient. But did that change what Google represents? No. That's because the fundamental elements of its identity remained intact. If Google suddenly changed its color palette completely or switched from a sans-serif typeface to a script one, it would become much harder to recognize. It would weaken the familiarity and recognition that branding is meant to build.
What is happening with ENHYPEN goes far beyond a simple rebrand.
Of course, neither I nor anyone else outside the company knows why this decision was made or what their long-term plans are. However, it is clear why so many fans are upset.
They didn't just change the logo. They removed both the hyphen in the "E" and the other hyphen, even though the hyphen has always been one of the most meaningful parts of ENHYPEN's identity. As stated in their Weverse description: "Like the meaning of hyphen (-), our group means that the 7 members are interwined as they search for themselves and grow together."
The hyphen was never just a design element. It symbolized connection whether that connection was between the members themselves or between the group and their fans. Removing it changes the symbolism that has been associated with the group since their debut, since last 6 years.
This is not just a poor marketing strategy, or this isn't some mere re-branding. this is the company vanishing their history, their lore, their bond with us.
First, they removed a member, and now they're removing their history, which shouldn't be acceptable to any of us. What are they going to do next? Change the group name? They've already removed the hyphen from the logo anyway. Change the fandom name too?
Nothing they've been doing makes any sense, and it's genuinely upsetting and disheartening. They can't just erase the bond, the history, and the connection that have been built over the years. Speak up about it.
And to those celebrating while dismissing the concerns of others: have some respect and shame on ALL of you. We are upset because we care deeply about the group, what its identity has represented for years and what our bond with them has been over the last 6 years. This is also totally disrespectful towards the boys!
