Asked about Wes Streeting’s reported resignation, Angela Rayner told ITV News that was a decision for the Health Secretary, but she would not “trigger the prime minister”.
She told ITV News’ UK Editor Paul Brand: “If he's got the support and people are going forward, then that's up to Wes. Again, I've said that I would not trigger the prime minister, and I want to make sure that we bring the party together.”
Angela Rayner has told ITV News she hasn’t done any deals with Andy Burnham amid an expected Labour leadership race.
The former Deputy Prime Minister told UK Editor Paul Brand: “I just think that we should all be working together. I think that's the important thing. I'm not doing deals or anything like that. I want us to get on with the job of actually delivering for the people of this country. And they're getting pretty fed up with the idea that people are jostling for this, that the other.”
Asked by ITV News’ UK Editor Paul Brand if she would want to be prime minster, Angela Rayner would not be drawn, adding: “I want to deliver as part of the team. And I've always said that it is a team effort. It's not one person. It's not a presidential situation. We all have to pull together to deliver that.”
It remains uncertain whether Sir Keir Starmer will remain in post with his allies reported to be bracing themselves for a leadership challenge by Health Secretary Wes Streeting on Thursday.
EXCL: Angela Rayner says she has been cleared of any deliberate wrongdoing by HMRC.
