What a joke! The funniest part of the new Greenland security deal that Trump trumpeted as a major U.S. achievement is that the U.S. already had sweeping military access to Greenland under a 1951 agreement.

So while Denmark didn’t literally dust off the old treaty, change “1951” to “2026,” and hand it back with a bow, Trump is celebrating a “historic” deal that, in large part, simply builds on rights America has had for 75 years.

The genuinely new pieces appear to be tighter restrictions aimed at China and Russia. However, they were never going to be allowed to build bases in Greenland anyway.

For those who are saying that Denmark sold Trump’s own lease back to him, it’s close enough that you can see why Copenhagen must be smiling.
