In January last year, Karl Robinson took his Salford side to the Etihad in the FA Cup. Guardiola told Robinson to see him afterwards “and make sure you bring Ryan Giggs”.
It was not a good day for Salford, trounced 8-0, but when Robinson and his director of football, Giggs, rocked up at Guardiola’s office they found the City manager worshipping the former Manchester United player.
“We’re not worthy,” Guardiola said to Giggs while animatedly kowtowing. Giggs was initially unsure whether Guardiola was being serious. “What a brilliant player you were,” Guardiola said, before dropping a bombshell. “Did you know Barcelona wanted to sign you when I was still playing for them? We were desperate to sign you but Ferguson wouldn’t allow it!” Giggs started laughing. “F------ Fergie!”
Robinson had encountered Guardiola before, when his old Oxford side played City in the Carabao Cup and his former striker Jamie Mackie told a bemused Pep to “f--- off you baldie t---”. Rather than take offence, Guardiola revelled in the blood and thunder of English football although City did have the final word.
Their kit men dumped a load of City shirts in the home team’s dressing room as a “gift” for the Oxford players – who subsequently discovered most had the name of João Cancelo on the back, whom they had running clashes during the game.

@JonD_BCFC He’s been one of our standout players for sure and still has more scope to improve and develop. Can definitely see us getting offers for him in the summer if we do drop down
@ChrisThebe Luckily our owner sold the club when we got that low. Kept the ground though and we are still renting if it off him. It only takes a bit of good fortune. We didn’t get any Wrexham type investment. Wilder came in at good time and things picked up. Momentum can build
@ChrisThebe Just realised it was actually a league game but point still stands. Conf was actually OK for 1-2 seasons and then the novelty wears off, so get how you feel. Especially when off field issues are worse than what’s on the pitch
