Mary Elizabeth Winstead stated that during breaks, she would often read message boards and comments about the idea of the original film being remade and be entertained by the hate and outrage.
Winstead noted that she would occasionally check message boards during production and found the intense "hate" from fans of the 1974 original entertaining because of how passionately people reacted to a film that hadn't even been released yet.
As a fan of the original 1974 film herself, she understood the protective nature of the fan base but viewed the 2006 version as a very different, more "slaughterhouse" style of slasher that wasn't trying to replace the classic.
In promotional interviews, she also expressed a fascination with the "morbid" and admitted she often found the over-the-top, shocking nature of the film's deaths so ridiculous that they made her laugh rather than feel scared.
