@tedgioia Interesting responses—from the sublime to the ridiculous. (I love Monk, but I'm not so sure he's such a great place to start.) And isn't it curious how Pops or Duke rarely get their due? Honestly, I have much more fun turning newbies on to "Potato Head Blues" than "Kind of Blue."
@Mark_Stryker Agree on OP; clearly a legend, but not one of my piano favorites. Still, his trio could be a dream rhythm section for saxophonists—including BW, Lester Young, and Stan Getz.
@darcyjamesargue@nytimes I'd suggest "Begin The Beguine," a '93 collection on the ASV label, for the clarity of its transfers. But other releases capture the "King of the Clarinet" in unique groups/concepts—including two different big bands with strings ('36-37 and '40) and a bebop-tinged outfit ('49).
@darcyjamesargue@nytimes Hear you on the Dream Band.
As for the Hermosa Beach gang, I agree w/Messrs. Cook & Morton (Penguin guide) that Sunday Jazz A La Lighthouse, Vol 2 is tops. Then again, sides by Artie Shaw's '44-45 band probably merit a spot.
IMHO, Duke out-Calloways Cab, so that's one I'd cut.
@ethan_iverson Never would have known Blakey wasn't playing high-hats. So he used the snare instead? (Really hear it on the closer, "More Than You Know.") But can't tell if it's a stick or brush in his left hand?
@Philak282 Got to give this one to #MilesDavis. In just 2 days (May 11 & October 26, 1956) his first great quintet (with Coltrane, Garland, Chambers, and Jones) recorded enough material for what would become four timeless Prestige classics: Cookin', Relaxin', Workin', and Steamin'.
@RickyRiccardi@Mark_Stryker The Ken Burns ‘Jazz’ 2000 compilation for Pops almost gets you there, @Mark_Stryker; once again, it’s “Stuttin’” that’s missing. The Burns disc does include “Heebie Jeebies” and “Tight Like This,” so there’s that. 😎
Had the best experience with @AlaskaAir. Absolutely every human & digital interaction was efficient, helpful, and positive. Air travel is stressful. The people of Alaska Airlines clearly understand that—and respond accordingly. Thanks to all.
@_motherslug Bit of a tangent, but I love 🔥 recreations of historic in-studio moments—L&M, Straight Outta Compton, Respect, 32 Short Films About Glenn Gould, and Walk The Line come to mind. Joaquin Phoenix's Johnny Cash auditioning for Dallas Roberts' Sam Phillips always gives me goosebumps.
@ethan_iverson For @TIDAL subscribers, here's a great-sounding playlist featuring the picks from @ethan_iverson's "Jazz Piano for All." 96 minutes of bliss. https://t.co/r1oxwG0R2s
Today we said goodbye to my dear mother with words and music of love—and this little video from the heart. “Audrey Lorraine Lucente passed peacefully at the age of 100 on December 11, 2022. Born and raised in San Jose, she graduated from San... https://t.co/TwYrNq3Xp3
@thesarahrose Very sorry for your loss. Right there with you. My mom passed on Dec 11 and the "little deaths" just keep coming. https://t.co/OOBxeDk2ci
