Three Piv’s Pals. Three national champions. Three left-column guys.

Around 4:30, the text came in. Simple and perfect:

“Piv, you want to join us for dinner?”

Thomas Sjoberg and Ryan Saarela live here in town, and Will Dunn was back visiting family. These three lads were all members of the 2016 University of St. Thomas National Championship team, and all three have been Piv’s Pals for a long time.

I was fortunate enough to be an assistant coach at UST during their time there, working for another true left-column guy, Johnny Tauer. So I had a front-row seat to see what made these guys special—not just as players, but as people.

In The Book of Piv, I talk about left-column people, left-column coaches and winners. These three are exactly what I’m talking about.

Before St. Thomas, they were outstanding Minnesota high school players who learned from some of the best coaches in the state. Will Dunn played at Benilde-St. Margaret’s under Jon Moore. Ryan Saarela played at Lakeville North under John Oxton. Thomas Sjoberg played at St. Thomas Academy under his father, Mike Sjoberg.

And the winning didn’t stop when their Tommie careers ended. Ryan and Thomas have both gone on to become very successful in their post-Tommie careers, while Will has continued his journey in basketball. Today, Will is an assistant coach with the Houston Rockets and recently had the opportunity to coach the Rockets in the Las Vegas Summer League.

Pretty special to watch where life has taken these three guys—and even better to know the people they have become.

Dinner was fantastic.

But dessert was better.

I invited the lads back to my place, where we enjoyed some outstanding cigars and, naturally, a few more stories.

As the beautiful Minneapolis August night rolled on, so did The Book of Piv philosophy:

All stories are as true as they need to be.

This will be a great opening day marathon. However...

Sioux Falls is home to the Summit League's headquarters and the conference tournament, yet there will be zero Summit League teams participating.

Seems like a glaring omission.

@DuluthGuy They're in the Pioneer Football League along with institutions whose main conferences are the MVC, A10, & Big East, & it seems to be a good home.

I think it's safe to say UST wants to be viewed as peers of fellow Catholic universities like Creighton, Marquette, Villanova, etc.

With Denver leaving after last season, that puts the Summit at 8 teams. If this rumor has any legs to it, I wonder if it's a sign that the Summit is struggling to recruit new members?

UST needs a backup plan if things go south in the Summit, & the MVC would be a logical new home

@SMUFBOffense I don't think UST is going to stay in the Summit forever, and if it dissolves before they have an opportunity to move conferences, you gotta have a plan. That's what I mean by "backup."

The Summit has no affiliation with the NCHC. Lindenwood will go to the CCHA if anything.

@Heggy2006 I'm not so certain they are as eager to bump up to scholarship as some may think.

I think they want to build their new baseball/softball facilities before they look at spending money on scholarship, addressing the old stadium, & aligning with Title IX.

I could be wrong though.
