Benjamin O. Davis Jr. commanded the 99th Fighter Squadron & the 332nd Fighter Group during WWII, escorting bombers on combat missions over Europe. When some senior officers attempted to remove Black pilots from combat, Davis went to the Pentagon & successfully defended his unit.
