Ecologist. PhD. Freshwater Pearl Mussel Officer @NatResWales. Still some African herps, chair @WirralARG, scientific associate @NHM_London. Views my own.
The release of captive bred Freshwater Pearl Mussels on the back of river restoration in Wales has begun. This is a year's work for me since starting my role with NRW, but decades of work by numerous NRW conservationists for this Endangered sp, which see the end of the beginning
@GeoffreyLean@medialens Amazingly, a very significant component of sea level rise is depletion of freshwater on land. As we drain wetlands & pump aquifers, so more is in the sea & less in land.

200 years of wildlife - 200 years of starring roles at London Zoo 📽️
Over our double-digit-decades of existence at ZSL, our founding pre-dates moving pictures even being invented. But we've inspired creative works of literature, film and television throughout our history.🧵
Squirrelpox threatens red squirrel populations across the UK. A vaccine offers hope, but public support is needed to help drive action.

Divers have recorded what they believe is the first underwater footage of a great white shark in the Mediterranean in waters between Sicily and Tunisia.
The divers were at the site of a ship wreck removing discarded fishing which trap marine life, when they spotted the shark. Marine experts have described the sighting as highly unusual and scientifically valuable.
Great Blist Hill and the other Ironworks Gorge historical, living museums are protected, just my wife hates the National Trust (which she calls the "Distrust") and I'm underwhelmed by them too (though their biodiversity stance is encouraging).

Been rigidly sticking to my @yahoomail account for decades for all my life's admin, work and personal. Yesterday it stopped working until I could delete vast amounts of emails. Had taken for granted the storage space. But probably time to use different platform.
Crane.
Just at the edge of #Cambridge, & breeding
Not so long ago this would have been quite unimaginable.
Also at this bit of wetland were Cuckoo, Marsh Harrier, Corn Bunting, Reed, Sedge & Cetti’s Warblers & much else besides.
Farmer here is very thoughtful about wildlife.
White-tailed Eagle’s to be released at Exmoor. @NaturalEngland will closely monitor progress, including economic impacts. Birds released at the Isle of Wight found to eat fish, seabirds & carrion & attract many tourists, so have been positive for economy.

Britain's largest bird of prey is returning.🦅
We've approved a new licence to release white-tailed eagles in Exmoor National Park. This builds on the existing Isle of Wight programme led by @forestryengland and @RoyDennisWF.

Our 6th year monitoring the amphibians of Royden Park, working to secure the dwindling Great Crested Newt population, and identifying Common Toad are doing even worse.
Catfish sold in fish & chip shops in Merseyside reminds me of when in New Brighton i asked what sort of fish was served and the teenage girl patronised with her hands, "a fish...from the sea!"

And this healthier headwater ecosystem provides the foundations for recovering wildlife across the Dee.
When we surveyed the river in 2021 we found just 2 salmon parr.
When we surveyed again in 2024 we found 54!
Step by step we can restore the Dee ecosystem.
Unveiling of the sculpture of Terry Jones #montypython today. In many ways tribute to the crazy world they satirised with the speakers not working properly, people at back not hearing the speeches like in #lifeofbrian , but we all sang #allwayslookonthebrightsideoflife together
If it’s not hares chewing through the wires, or inquisitive red deer knocking them over, it’s Great Bustards attacking our monitoring cameras! Absolute vandals, the lot of them 😉
