Manager: It starts at 7:30.

Employee: In the evening?

Manager: Yes. Different time zones.

Employee: I’m not available at 7:30 today.

Manager: It’s important for your role that you’re there.

Employee: If I’d had more notice, I could have adjusted my hours, but I’m off work at 5 p.m. and can’t make it today.

Manager: Just sign back in later for the meeting.

Employee: I’m unavailable after 5pm. Will the meeting be recorded?

Manager: This is a CLM.

Employee: Not attending a last-minute meeting outside working hours is a career limiting move?

Manager: Yes. It won’t look good when promotions come up.

Employee: Okay… (starts typing)

Manager: Did you hear me?

Employee: Yes. I’m documenting this so I’m clear. I’ll email my notes as well.

(The manager looks surprised.)

Employee: So, to confirm — refusing unexpected evening work may affect promotion opportunities?

Manager: This isn’t necessary.

Employee: Anything else you’d like to add?

Silence.

Employee: No? Okay then.
