@RevJacquiLewis For too many people the purpose of their engagement is not to understand but to twist the words of others into a strawman to support their own narratives.
It boils down to bearing false witness.
@e_maph@masonmennenga @leftcoastnv @StandAndKnox Predestination seems like the ultimate in-group!
Don't overthink it, I'm just heckling from the outside.
@masonmennenga@e_maph @leftcoastnv @StandAndKnox off topic, but is predestination just universalism for your own group while still wanting hell for everyone else?
@TonyGunkz@indyfreethink @Mickey_Jim_1 @derekwebb@gracebaldridge I guess what I'm objecting to is a tone that feels arrogant and uncharitable. A disagreeing perspective is an "intellectually dishonest" take that denies that which is clearly obvious for all to see. Like disagreement isn't in good faith, but is compromised or stupid.
@TonyGunkz@indyfreethink @Mickey_Jim_1 @derekwebb@gracebaldridge I want to suggest that your style of arguing is not as civil as you seem to pride it to be. Your comments have been full of disparaging personal digs and insinuations. I forgive you, but please consider that going forward.
@TonyGunkz@indyfreethink @Mickey_Jim_1 @derekwebb@gracebaldridge You keep asserting that I have said things that I didn't say. Why is that?
Maybe we can agree that non-affirming churches shouldn't drive people away from God.
@indyfreethink@TonyGunkz @Mickey_Jim_1 @derekwebb@gracebaldridge I'm talking about when LGBTQ people show up to my church suicidal, depressed, addicted, having been exiled from their church, cut off from their family, because they are LGBTQ.
If non-affirming churches are correct, why are these its fruits in the lives of LGBTQ people?
@indyfreethink@TonyGunkz @Mickey_Jim_1 @derekwebb@gracebaldridge You're doing a lot of projecting right now. That's fine.
I'd like you to respond to my question about how you account for the devastation in the wake of non-affirming churches, if your understanding and approach is correct?
@indyfreethink@TonyGunkz @Mickey_Jim_1 @derekwebb@gracebaldridge Again, one of the issues here is the misapplication of the label of sin. Being an alcoholic is not an inherent part of who God has created someone to be.
One reason non-affirming theology it's so harmful is because it tries to turn people against their God-given nature.
@TonyGunkz@indyfreethink @Mickey_Jim_1 @derekwebb@gracebaldridge It suggests to me that it is sinful to teach people to hate and fear parts of themselves that are inherent to how God has created them.
@TonyGunkz@indyfreethink @Mickey_Jim_1 @derekwebb@gracebaldridge Because of the wages of sin are death. The fruits of sin are clear in the lives of people who are willing to examine themselves deeply.
If the fruits of non-affirming churches are misery, and suffering, and even death, what does that suggest to you about those churches?
@indyfreethink @Mickey_Jim_1 @TonyGunkz@derekwebb@gracebaldridge I don't have a quick, Twitter friendly way to answer this, and to be honest, I'm not sure that if I tried to spell it all out, it would be particularly convincing or fruitful for you. I can say that there's some great books out there, but that's probably unsatisfying as well.
@indyfreethink @Mickey_Jim_1 @TonyGunkz@derekwebb@gracebaldridge It's a fair question and a good question, in effect, what is the Christian sexual ethic here? How do we arrive at LGBTQ+ inclusion, which for some of us includes affirming sexual behaviors?
@indyfreethink @Mickey_Jim_1 @TonyGunkz@derekwebb@gracebaldridge I agree with you. For some, that means turning from the sin of internalized homophobia, the sin of labeling as evil what God has made good within us. That can be amazingly freeing and result in much closer relationship with God.
