@johnsemley3000 I don’t think the film is about whether mass art (specifically satire) can “save” the world. Instead, it’s about how the social function of satire has shifted from challenging power to soothing a limited class of people benefiting from the very power ostensibly being satirized.
@Panther_Plugz_ His pocket awareness, at the college level, is the best I’ve ever seen. He also had a gift for putting the exact right amount of touch on the ball. Glad to see that he’s turning the corner in the NFL.
@jakebrodes It is beyond hilarious that all it took to silence these CEOs’ claims that AI would destroy humanity—no doubt true, tho not in the way they envision—was Trump being like “well what if we called it ‘super intelligence.’”
@profpjm@jennfrey lol found a real-life version of that weird kid sitting at the end of the table in that one Children of Men scene—vacuously swiping away on his fav apps and eating a nice steak in a dread, anti-human future.
@reset_by_peer If AI has a beneficial use in handling customer service queries, it is only to the extent that its sycophantic tendencies might cause it to actually approve a request that the automated touch-tone systems would just stonewall you on before forcing a call disconnect lol
@PanasonicDX4500 I absolutely love that the most common “Everyman” use case being bandied about lately is “an AI agent can check into your flights for you.” Setting aside this takes seconds to do manually, the average person takes fewer than 2 round-trip flights a year lol.
@mike_frags Structurally and historically, the constitution prob requires a true vacancy before confirmation. This was actually litigated forever ago re: J. Black and decided on narrow standing grounds. But yes: no chance it wins today bc 80% of SC/COA judges would be unlawfully appointed.
@AbhiKambli1984 States can, of course, the same way they do felons. But the qualifications clause, coupled with the long history of states letting non-citizen residents vote in fed elections (30+ states have had one point or another since the founding) puts the issue solely within states’ ambit.
@AbhiKambli1984 there’s an outcome here where Congress has authority to bar illegally present immigrants (like this woman) from voting in fed elections. But there is no credible view of the constitution—especially an originalist one—that lets Congress prohibit legal resident non-citizens.
@Dwight_Bend@OoltewahBammer At least he’s stopped acting like he’s never seen a fast food restaurant before lol. There’s still enough juice in the Borat-shtick tank to marvel at SEC stadiums. But not enough to convince people that raising canes’ offerings are transcendent and unknown to the Old Country.
@shipwreckedcrew So, direct fed involvement only dates back to 1996 and is against a broader history of states’ permitting it until they didn’t. Maybe states’ changing view grants the fed gov the belated authority to make such a ban federal. But that sounds like living constitutionalism to me.
@shipwreckedcrew 30+ states have, at some point, permitted non citizens to vote in state and fed elections. This gradually changed over time: by 1924, all states barred it—but that was the states’ decision. In 1996, Congress passed a fed law barring non-citizens from voting in fed elections.
@emkenobi I haven’t watched Lizzie Borden. The ending of the Ed Gein show was insane—basically like Gein was like the Velvet Underground who inspired all these other cool bands to do their thing. It was so bad it almost worked as a condemnation of the true-crime fantasia genre lol
@shipwreckedcrew Will really be interesting; the simple fact is there is zero historical support for the fed gov defining who states can let vote (rather, the US constitution merely sets the floor for who must be given that right, ie, US citizens).
@politicalmiller Goad dems into confirming a “middle of the road” conservative replacement (sort of like Obama tried with garland). He will just not take senior if that won’t work.
@politicalmiller Even tho it’s legally dubious (no true vacancy) justices don’t formally cede their seats these days until after their replacement has been confirmed. My guess is, if he wants to retire, he will announce his intention to take senior upon a replacement and see if GOP can…
