#Opinion | "Due to a lack of representation worldwide, the distortion of facts and removal of information on Wikipedia pose a serious problem for the #Kuki-Zo tribals in #Manipur," writes @Tonsing_S.

While laying foundation stones and inaugurating projects sounds like an administrative development , how do you reconcile this with the fact that people from hill areas still endure 16-hour journeys through dangerous terrain via Mizoram due to poor connectivity and lack of safe passage?
Is @narendramodi taking this route to visit Churachandpur & feel the pain of the people?
Development without justice is not progress. It is just a lame performance. IT park over unresolved ethnic tensions??
Our leaders may fall for money but Gen-Z won't.
An uninvited guest who kept silent for 2 years suddenly wants to show up. For what?
LAMKA Gen-Z won't clap and they aren't impressed either.

Even after a deliberate appeal from the Paite Tribe Council on 15/08/25, the @KSOShillong & @KSO_Pune continues to use the #Paite traditional shawl in their letterhead and in a banner.
This is seen as a direct challenge to the Paite #Tribe and the #Zomi community at large.

We express our gratitude to the CRPF for accepting our request to designate Churachandpur as a test centre for the SSC GD PST/PET 2025. This will greatly ease the burden on aspiring students.
We extend our best wishes to all candidates for their success!
Differences between Zomi and Kuki
Zomi and Kuki represent two distinct identities with separate historical, cultural, and political foundations. The term *Zomi* , meaning “ *Zo people* ” ( Zo = ancestral name, *mi* = people), is not the name of a tribe but a collective nomenclature adopted by nine tribes, such as Paite, Tedim Chin, Gangte, Kom, Mate, Simte, Thangkhal, Zou, and Vaiphei, who share common linguistic, cultural, and historical heritage rooted in the Zo ancestry.
This nomenclature is indigenous, arising from the people’s own traditions and oral history, and was revived in the mid-20th century through church, student, and political movements such as the Zomi Baptist Convention* and the Zomi National Congress.
By contrast, Kuki is a colonial-era ethnonym first introduced by the British during the 18th and 19th centuries to *classify certain hill communities for administrative and military purposes* .
_Unlike the indigenous origin of “Zomi,”_ the term “Kuki was imposed externally, grouping together various tribes primarily on the basis of geography and administrative convenience. While the Kuki identity continues to be represented by political organizations such as Kuki Inpi and the Kuki National Organisation (KNO), Zomi identity is upheld by the Zomi Council, Zomi Re-unification Organisation (ZRO), and the Zomi Revolutionary Army (ZRA), which *reject imposed colonial labels and assert the right to self-identification* .
We firmly oppose compound identities such as “ Kuki ” or “ Kuki-Zo ” where our identity is predominant (Lamka, Tedim, Cikha and Tonzang), arguing that it undermines our chosen nomenclature.
*At the core of the difference lies a fundamental principle* : Zomi identity is a self-chosen, indigenous designation with no direct relationship to the Kuki identity since time immemorial, whereas *Kuki identity retains and promotes a colonial-era classification as its modern political label.*
*In Essence* :
1. Zomi = collective nomenclature of 9 tribes with shared Zo heritage.
2. Kuki = colonial-era ethnonym with shifting definitions, not universally accepted by us, the proud Zo people.

My latest for @Outlookindia published in the Magazine’s June 21, 2025 issue, looks at why cricket’s entry into the Northeast isn’t just about infrastructure, it’s about recognition, identity, and the long shadow of exclusion. In print, it appears as ‘The Tailenders.’
I write on Manipur’s Quiet Fracture for @Outlookindia . Displacement, distrust, and the limits of politics, a tale of a state divided by violence, lives remain suspended between slogans of unity and the silence of waiting.

Our sincere gratitude to our Zonahthlak Mizo brethren who has been with us, through thick and thin despite the rains and rough terrain showing us support in every way. What we need is a permanent solution to solve the route issues, from Churachandpur (Lamka) to Mzr.
For @Outlookindia , I wrote on what the Arunachal Police’s FIR against Ebo Mili reveals about the future of Indigenous land rights in India, a story of resistance, repression, and the moral questions of development in the Siang Valley.
My latest op-ed for @IndianExpress . A small attempt to make sense of the fractures in Manipur’s political landscape and to ask the difficult questions about what “popular government” really means when a state is so deeply divided.
