Roger Federer dropped some real wisdom in his Dartmouth commencement speech:
He won nearly 80% of his 1,526 professional matches, but only 54% of the points he played.
Even one of the greatest tennis players of all time lost almost half his points.
His lesson: Don’t dwell on every mistake. A double fault, a lost point, even a bad day, it’s just one point. The champions move on quickly with the same focus and fire for the next one.
This is one of the best mindset lessons I’ve heard in a long time. It applies way beyond tennis.
Life is full of losses and setbacks. The difference between average and exceptional is how quickly you reset and keep playing.
League games starting tonight at Kennedy. Sophomores will play at 6pm and 7pm followed by the Freshman at 8pm and 9pm. Looking forward to the start of Summer Basketball.
Several grad parties attended for the class of 2026 at Kennedy; in reflection, they were truly a great group of students who posted potentially the highest class GPA in Kennedy's history, & made significant contributions in AP exams. Their leadership & presence will be missed .
The secret is there is no secret. It takes what it takes.
Success is dirty, hard work. Don’t talk about it, be about it. Lean into the small, consistent actions everyday. They compound overtime and add up to something great. Success isn’t guaranteed, but without putting in the work, you have no chance.
There are no quick fixes or shortcuts.
Focus on and trust in the process.
Show up everyday. Put in the work. Focus on the foundation of the small, consistent actions. That’s “the secret.” That’s what it takes to be great.
Go be great!
@RyanHoliday Are you comfortable being uncomfortable?
Being able to accept the struggle, handle the struggle, and and thrive with a little struggle seems to be harder for so many.
This is an important reminder for parents with too many trying to eliminate any struggle for their child today.
So very proud of these guys. Went from 2 wins a year ago to 10 this season. Today the road ended in substate. They improved as tennis players, but I’m so much more proud of who they are as people. Thanks for letting us be part of your journey!
Mind Candy “High love is high standards. Lowering standards is not a sign that you care. It’s not an act of love. It’s an act of fear. Soft coaching is the opposite of love. It says, "I don't think you're capable of more or better." @usabasketball
Proud of these guys today, as they each won at least one match. Our doubles teams played in the matches to go to state, and Ollie and Luke earned medals. Shout out to Cougar alum @ramihemaidan for coming to Iowa City to cheer us on and @lukebrayden for all his hard work at ICW.
This piece on Coach Kerr from Wright Thompson is extraordinary. Everyone who is interested in good writing, good craft, or good coaching should read it and savor it. My god is it good.
