In classical creedal books, atheism is normally referred to as ‘dahriyya’, from the word ‘dahr’ which means a period of time. Atheists believe that there is no ‘ākhira’ and over time they will just die - and that’s the end. Hence, they called ‘dahriyya’. This concept has been mentioned and refuted by Allāh in the Qurʾān (45:24): ‘And they argue, there is nothing beyond our worldly life. We die; others are born. And nothing destroys us but [the passage of] time (dahr). Yet they have no knowledge [in support] of this [claim]. They only speculate.’
