Hi, Welcome, Why am I here?

I'm touring the USA right now and this video is a 'hello!' which gives a bit of context for new comers to my channel.

Welcome to my channel, and to my journey. Things will be a bit different to normal during June and July as I am on a speaking tour of the US, but I think you'll find that I get up to some pretty interesting things, speak to some pretty interesting people, and along the way I'll still be releasing semi-regular Topher Project videos that I'm known for.

This is likely to get messy.

Matthew Guy is considering suing Moira Deeming MP for defamation because she's filed a police report accusing him of assault?

To be clear I'm not going to offer any opinion on the events under investigation, but I AM interested in the tactics being used.

I could understand that defamation proceedings might be the right approach if the accusation was just in the media or something like that, where the damage was purely public and reputational, that would make sense, but defamation as a response to an actual police report?

How is a judge going to rule on that, given we're supposed to #believeallwomen these days?

Thought experiment, WITHOUT prejudice as to what happened or didn't, but follow me here for a minute:

Let's assume for a moment that the police decide NOT to pursue the matter, which is Matthew Guy's best case scenario at this point... unless the police ALSO turn around and charge Moira with making a FALSE report, which seems exceedingly unlikely under any circumstances, then essentially what the police would be saying in such a hypothetical is 'she thought it was an assault, we don't think it met the threshold, so we're not proceeding with it.'

NOW if Matthew Guy pursues a defamation suit, what is he asking the judge to rule? That reporting something you believe to be a crime is now a bankruptable offence if the police decline to prosecute?

That every time an accusation is made, but no conviction recorded, that the accused can bankrupt the accuser?

I just don't see a judge as likely to buy that argument or be willing to set that precedent.

Now of course there can be other variables and I'm not seeking to presume or prejudice, but I just don't see a defamation suit being a smart play in this case.

What if the police decline to prosecute, but Matthew Guy then LOSES a defamation suit? What if the judge finds that it's not 'defamatory' to report something you believe to be a crime, and then to talk about the fact that you reported it, even in the event the Police take no action?

We've seen defamation lawsuits backfire spectacularly before...

The hysteria here is insane. I'm in London now, locals have been receiving 'do not travel' warnings due to the 'extreme heat', and they've been CANCELLING THEIR PLANS in response!

It's madness, but I've overheard locals discussing their cancelled plans as they 'take refuge' inside cafes.

The heat?

Warm, certainly humid and sticky... but not dangerous.

What have we become, that we receive and OBEY 'do not travel' directives for a humid summer's day?

In America, servers do MORE than you ask, and they make you fell good about it, like it was their pleasure.

In mainland Europe, servers do LESS than you asked, and they make you feel bad about it, like you were an imposition.

In the UK, servers do exactly what you ask for, no more, no less, and they make you feel nothing at all.

I'm sure there is a doctoral thesis buried in here somewhere...
