TRUMP ASKS MUSK TO RESTORE UKRAINE'S STARLINK CAPABILITIES

Trump reportedly called Elon Musk and urged him to lift restrictions on Ukraine's military-grade Starlink service, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The speed cap had limited Ukraine's ability to operate drones and missile interceptors.

Officials say performance improved after the call, though full functionality has not been restored.

I met with Norwegian Minister of Defense Tore O. Sandvik, Kongsberg President and CEO Eirik Lie, and representatives of the company, which manufactures NASAMS air defense systems. These systems effectively protect our people and critical infrastructure from Russian missile and drone strikes virtually every day. We are counting on additional defense support packages next month.

Norway is also actively involved in FREYJA, our European anti-ballistic program. We already have the first results in developing individual components of the system. Today, we identified where we can and must accelerate our work so that testing can begin by the end of this year. We also discussed in detail launching work on new satellite communication capabilities for our warriors. We will involve partners who have the capacity to provide support. Thank you, Norway!

For a week, Ukraine's interceptor drones lost their satellite link above about 160 km/h. Russia's jet drones fly about twice as fast.

On 20 October, The Wall Street Journal reported that Elon Musk ordered the speed cap on Starshield, the military version of SpaceX's Starlink network, citing people familiar with the matter.

Musk had said such limits were decided by the US military and "ultimately POTUS."

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said, "We haven't made any directives or anything like that." Trump said, "I don't know who it was, but I'd like to find out."

WSJ's sources differed on Trump's role. One said Musk spoke with several senior administration officials, Trump among them, before imposing the cap.

Six days before the cap began, Trump gave Musk the National Medal of Science.

Kyiv says the cap is still in place. Its top diplomat in Washington, Denys Sienik, said Kyiv was still waiting for answers from the Pentagon and SpaceX.

WSJ: Some U.S. officials say that Musk acted unilaterally and that Trump didn’t specifically order any retribution against Ukraine.

But a person familiar with the situation said Musk talked to multiple senior administration officials, including with Trump, before imposing the new speed cap, which Ukrainian officials said had allowed Russian missiles to evade their defenses.

Putin couldn’t stop Ukraine from hammering Russian supply lines. Now, according to Russian military bloggers, restrictions on Starlink, built by Elon Musk’s SpaceX are doing some of the work for him.

Those supply routes keep Russia’s occupation alive, delivering troops, weapons and fuel.

So why is Washington making Ukraine’s job harder and Putin’s easier?

Trump calls it America First.
