“You’re not a journalist if you’re taking privacy into account” is quite a statement.

Privacy, public interest and minimizing unnecessary harm are absolutely considerations in responsible journalism.

Ed Oliver is a public figure. His child was not. And being a public figure does not mean every tragedy involving your family immediately becomes public property.

Nobody is arguing that the story could never be reported. The issue is whether there was a compelling public interest in exposing an intensely personal tragedy before Oliver chose to make it public himself.

For nearly seven weeks, people who knew exercised restraint and allowed a grieving father and his family some privacy. I don’t consider that a failure of journalism.

And if exercising independent judgment about whether publishing something causes needless harm makes me a “mouthpiece for the organization,” that’s a fascinating conclusion you’ve made for someone you don’t know.

Sometimes people independently arrive at the same conclusion because it’s the decent one.

We clearly disagree on where that line belongs. I’m perfectly comfortable with where I drew mine.

Knowing something does not automatically create a journalistic obligation to publish it. Journalists make editorial decisions every day about privacy, relevance and legitimate public interest. The death of a player’s young child, while he and his family are privately grieving, had no bearing on football, his job performance or any matter the public needed to know at that moment.

Respecting that boundary doesn’t make someone a “mouthpiece.” It means recognizing that journalism comes with judgment and responsibility, not simply an obligation to publish every piece of private information you happen to learn. If your definition of journalism is “I know it, therefore everyone else should too,” then I think we simply have very different definitions of journalistic integrity.

Yes, because “journalistic integrity” is famously defined as making sure you beat a grieving father to announcing the death of his child.

Silly me.

I thought there was still a distinction between information being available and information the public is entitled to know.

There’s a rather significant difference between “gatekeeping information” and exercising journalistic judgment about whether the public has a legitimate need to know something deeply personal.

The death of someone’s child isn’t a transaction where the first person to hit “post” wins.

Especially when that person is gloating that they “broke” the story all the while supporting a conspiracy narrative on his ability to practice or insinuating something foul occurred.

Bills’ Ed Oliver deserved to grieve his son privately.

I wrote this article this morning totally engulfed in emotion, anger and sadness for a man I don’t know and will never know me.
