bugünlerden geriye,
bir yarına gidenler kalır
bir de yarınlar için dövüşenler
...
ey herşey bitti diyenler
korkunun sofrasında yılgınlık yiyenler.
ne kırlarda direnen çiçekler
ne kentlerde devleşen öfkeler
henüz elveda demediler.
bitmedi daha sürüyor o kavga
ve sürecek.

Was Turkey’s elimination pure bad luck, or just terrible decision-making?
On the surface, the macro stats look like a dominant team that just got unlucky:
• 61 Shots (1st in the tournament)
• 4.83 total xG
• 73.5% Ball possession (1st)
• 171 Progressive passes (1st)
• 17 Key passes (Top 5)
• 80 Touches in the penalty area (Top 2)
But when you look closer, the "bad luck" narrative completely falls apart. It wasn't bad luck,
it was a total breakdown in shot selection and quality:
• Poor accuracy: Out of 61 shots, only 12 were on target (19.6% accuracy, only Iraq ranked lower).
• Impatience: 52.4% of their shots (32) came from outside the box (highest in the tournament).
• Tunnel vision: Too many possessions ended with a forced, low-percentage shot instead of making the extra pass. Players chose to shoot through a wall of defenders rather than finding an open teammate in a better position.
• Low quality: They averaged a miserable 0.079 xG per shot (ranked 44th).
• Easy for keepers: 39.3% of their shots were blocked. Of the 12 that actually hit the target, 9 went straight down the middle.
The contrast is right here: When Turkey actually had the patience to work the ball inside the box, their xG per shot jumped to a high 0.20.
Turkey has fantastic individual talent, but they played like individuals. Everyone wanted to hit the "hero shot" from 30 yards out instead of breaking down the block as a team. Vincenzo Montella’s job was to turn these individuals into a cohesive unit, and he failed.
