@drheaddamage I think the factors in this are quite complex. There is an element of self selecting that comes into play. And better off people can always buy their way in. But even if you ignore that how "we" currently select isn't great to start with.
@drheaddamage I'm surprised you're okay with limiting academic career paths earlier than now. There are good jobs to be had with a PhD outside of unis.
I'd also be worried that disappearing opportunities would specifically penalise girls and minority groups in science.
