So after Sunday's episode, my mother wasn't talking to me. I wasn't exactly surprised. The meeting had ended the way most of my family interventions end - with people staring at the floor, avoiding eye contact, and pretending I hadn't just detonated a truth bomb in the middle of the gathering.

Monday morning, before I left for base, my father called me into the sitting room. My mother was seated there too. The atmosphere was calm, but I knew we were about to review the events of the previous day.

My father looked at me and said, "Amaka, there are two things I want you to know."

I listened carefully.

"First, regardless of the fact that your opinions usually cause trouble wherever they land..." Even my mother nodded at that one.

"...I am proud that you have never been afraid to stand for the truth."

I wasn't expecting that.
