Christ’s conversation with Nicodemus completely changes the way we understand human evolution.

Nicodemus comes to Christ “in the night.”
Not in ignorance, but in a state of higher perception, the ancient clairvoyance that sees beyond physical senses.

And Christ answers him in the language of the Mysteries.

“Unless a man be born of water and air, he cannot enter the Kingdom of Heaven.”

Dr Steiner shows that the original meaning is literal:

Water means water.
Air means air.

Christ is pointing to the future of humanity — and to its past.

Humanity did not always possess the dense physical body we have today.
Consciousness descended through cosmic states:

- On Ancient Saturn, humanity existed as warmth.
- On Ancient Sun, warmth condensed into air.
- On Ancient Moon, the human being lived in a fluidic state of water and vapor.
- On Earth, the human form gradually hardened:
air separated from water, fluid became dense, cartilage and bone appeared.

As matter condensed, consciousness dimmed.
We gained individuality — but lost spiritual vision.

The old clairvoyance faded.
Humanity became separated from the divine environment in which it once lived.
This was not only a fall — it was the birth of the individual “I.”

The ego became independent.
But independence came at a cost.

Humanity learned to say “I,” but forgot the cosmic source from which the “I” was born.

Christ enters human evolution to transform the destiny of this ego.

The Logos becomes flesh.
The “I AM” enters the physical world.

What was once accessible only to initiates becomes a possibility for every human being.

This is why Christ’s invokes the ancient image of the serpent being lifted up.
The serpent represents the initiate who could rise beyond ordinary consciousness and perceive the spiritual world.

Now the son of man will be lifted up.
Spiritual awakening becomes part of humanity's evolutionary future.

Even the Old Testament prepares for this moment:

When Moses asks for the divine name, the answer is:
“I AM.”

Steiner shows how the manna corresponds to Manas (Spirit‑Self), and the “Bread of Life” to Budhi (Life‑Spirit).

Humanity moves from receiving a concept of the divine to receiving the life of the divine.

And this returns us to Nicodemus.

Why must humanity be born again?

Because humanity must become something beyond its current state.
The physical body itself must be transformed.
The descent into matter is not the final destination.

Ancient humanity lived in divine consciousness without individuality.
Modern humanity has individuality but is cut off from the divine.

The future human being must unite the two:
individuality without separation from the spiritual world.

Not a rejection of the physical.
Not a regression into unconscious mysticism.
But the conscious spiritualization of the human being.

The “I” that was born through the descent into matter must awaken and consciously return to the spiritual world.

Christ is the force that makes this possible.

Matter must be spiritualized.
The ego must be illumined.
The lost connection with the divine must be consciously restored.

The story of Christ and Nicodemus is about the entire evolutionary destiny of humanity.

We are not finished.
The human “I” is still becoming.

And its ultimate task is to become so fully individual that the divine can once again live consciously through us.
