Microsoft has just released an emergency update (out-of-band) to fix Windows Recovery issues in Windows 11 24H2 / 25H2.

A bug that shipped to everyone with the October 2025 security update effectively rendered WinRE (Windows Recovery Environment) unusable.

The update broke mouse and keyboard support in WinRE.

This meant you couldn’t troubleshoot or recover your PC even when on the WinRE screen, as you couldn’t use the mouse or keyboard to navigate.

Now, an emergency update has been released to patch this issue in Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2.

The emergency patch is titled Windows 11 KB5070773 with Build 26200.6901 (25H2) and 26100.6901 (24H2).

It’s rolling out via Windows Update.

Microsoft says it's currently not aware of issues with the emergency update...

Microsoft has released the August 2025 Patch Tuesday updates for Windows 11. This update replaces Blue Screen of Death with Black Screen of Death, as part of Microsoft's efforts to modernize Windows 11.

These updates are important because they fix security problems and other bugs found in recent months, so you should install them right away. You can get them through Settings > Windows Update or from the Microsoft Update Catalog.

For Windows 11 24H2, KB5063878 will update your system to Build 26100.4946.

For 23H2, KB5063875 will update it to Build 226x1.5768. If you are on 23H2, remember that support ends on November 11, 2025, after which you will be upgraded to 24H2 or stop getting updates.

What's new in Windows 11 August 2025 Update for version 24H2:

1. In Europe, AI features like Recall are now available.
2. The Settings app is easier to search with Agentic Search Bar, and problems with unresponsive windows and saving Wi-Fi passwords are fixed.
3. A new quick machine recovery tool can automatically fix major boot problems.
3. The Start menu, Snap layouts, and Windows Search have been fixed.
4. The touch keyboard now has a better gamepad layout, even for lock screen PIN entry.
5. File Explorer performance and icon display issues are fixed, and notifications should now open the correct apps.
6. The system should feel faster if you had issues after the May update.
7. A new Black Screen of Death, which replaces the Blue Screen of Death.

Microsoft says there are no known problems with this update, so it is safe to install.
