As Quebec's provincial election approaches, deeply concerning reports of escalating online hate targeting 2SLGBTQI candidates should concern every Canadian who believes in democracy.

Candidates from across the political spectrum have described a surge in homophobic and transphobic abuse, with many warning that this climate of intimidation is already discouraging people from diverse backgrounds from seeking public office.

This isn't happening in isolation. Since early 2022, Canada and much of North America have witnessed the rapid growth of an organized anti-2SLGBTQI and anti-gender movement that seeks to normalize hostility toward queer and trans communities. One of its clearest objectives is to create a chilling effect: to convince sexual and gender minorities that public life, leadership and democratic participation simply aren't worth the abuse.

We cannot allow that strategy to succeed. In a healthy liberal democracy, every person, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, must feel safe putting their name on a ballot, participating in public debate and serving their community without fear of harassment or threats.

Governments at every level in Canada have a responsibility to respond with urgency. That means strengthening enforcement against hate-motivated threats and online harassment, investing in digital safety and victim supports, improving public education to counter misinformation and extremism, and working closely with civil society organizations to prevent hate before it escalates into violence.
