A very unfortunate update on Absolute Bagels.
Rafe Evans, the broker of the property, confirmed that Absolute Bagels is permanently closing, and that he will list the space at the end of next week.
"And we all agree another bagel store is the highest and best use of the space.”
We are flattered that @TheBearFX producers took the time to painstakingly mock up our site. Fortunately, restaurants are no longer closing due to Covid-19, but we do have an Italian Beef guide that you might be interested in? https://t.co/dZnDMZ7Ytw
A huge loss. I learned so much from Patrick about biography. And even more about cultivating active curiosity and unerring positivity against all odds. I will miss his intellect and his kindness.
Deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Patrick French. He was a wonderful writer, whose books on Francis Younghusband and VS Naipaul are classics of modern biographical writing. He was also a very fine human being, unfailingly generous to friends and strangers alike.
For months I have been investigating how a US Marine adopted a baby girl who was orphaned in Afghanistan, and took her away from her family. This is a story about the battle over a little girl -- and about the fictions we tell ourselves. For @NYTmag

A thread on Hindi films where you’d spot the poster of another Hindi film featuring a cast member.
Om Puri’s ‘changing the car tyre’ scene in Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro (1983) has a poster of him from Shodh (1981) in the background.
In the 1960s Glasgow, the Scottish capital, became home to a strange but fabulously enticing curry war; something delectable emerged from it – the Chicken Tikka Masala, that still holds the people of the British Isles in raptures. A thread. 1/18
Such an honor to work on this new archive-based literary biography of Agyeya by @Akshayamukul, that rare journalist-scholar who is also wonderfully kind, collaborative, and unflinchingly principled.
What I loved most was how the book beautifully illuminates the startling modernity of every earlier era (exemplified in this passage featuring Urdu writer Krishan Chander), with conversations that echo and resound with familiar humor, pathos and frustrations.
Cofounder of @AltNews#Zubair, facing 3 cases & in jail last 12 days, was arrested for offences that don’t require arrest, according to 2014 #SC orders, which say police/magistrates who violate them liable for punitive action, writes @areebuddin14

Lodhi Gardens is a party. Some guy just tried to (very respectfully) chat me up "not as a man talking to a woman" but because he is a demisexual and was attracted to my mind.
